So to me he is super hokey and what I imagine a northern stereotype of southern people is. My brother loves him but we are from the mid Atlantic and didn’t grow up in the Deep South. I came to BR for school in 2012 and lived there for 10 years and now married into a Louisiana family.

My brother is adamant that Wright is one of the greatest sports reporters of our lifetime and I told him that’s because he plays really well to the northeast and west coast who basically just see the stereotype, and Thompson leans into that.

Am I crazy and he’s actually very good, or is he a caricature who depends on stereotypes of southern people to push his content to people who don’t know any better?

I feel like every way you described him is accurate. He is very good. But he’s also a little bit of a caricature. I think part of it is that to make any form of living doing what he does, the volume has to be cranked up to 11 on your personality, your viewpoint, etc.

I’d say he’s more of a writer than reporter though.

I think he’s solid. Knows his lane and does it well. Probably one of the most iconic sports narrator’s voices of the last decade.

Not sure if I would call him one of the greatest reporters of my lifetime though.

Nothing worse than a syrupy Southerner making bank by projecting hand-picked SJW takes (usually revolving around the evil white man) to his progressive masters in NYC (or Bristol). I really resent him despite his talent.

I have lived my entire life in the South, and for him to be some world-renowned writer, the only thing I know about him is the True South series.

I think he tries too hard to be an Old South Mark Twain

In a world full of click bait and hot take shock jocks, he is a true sports writer

Is some of it a schtick? Probably

Does that take away from his stories? I don't think so

Spot on. His deep south side kick with the glasses is unbearable. I can't even watch that show because he thinks he needs to talk in poetry form.

He’s definitely a tryhard.

Don’t care much for him . I see him out occasionally in Oxford.

He writes like he tries to sound like the smartest southerner who ever lived .

He is a talented writer who has had remarkable success in his field.

Even though his political leanings/personal worldview get inserted into nearly every story, his articles about international sports and sports stories involving crimes are quite good.

On the other hand, his stories about the South or America (broader themes) can be insufferable. As other posters have said, he panders to coastal liberals who look down upon the South (to be fair, these are his editors/the media gatekeepers). Self-flagellation/abasement is a small price to be paid for temporal success.

I could do without his constant name-dropping/big dicking of the readers. We get it, you run in circles with socially prominent Southerners palatable to the Garden & Gun demographic. I don't know how bragging that you tailgate with John Currence or Curtis Wilkie is supposed to add to your stories.
