While not a Western, highly recommend A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman Maclean. It definitely fits the national park vibe, especially with the logging and Ranger stories.

Going to Wyoming for the first time later this summer. Read Wink's short stories and they've been amazing but these two novels are supposed to be some of his best work. Hoping to read one before we head West and the other while I'm there. I'll probably fail at that. Enjoy yourself and safe travels.

Not a western, but a good book about backcountry rangers. This particular book is about a backcountry ranger at Yosemite. This is one of those books that takes you down a rabbit hole where you end up reading 3-4 other books referenced in the book.

Not sure if you already took your trip, but some light fiction I would recommend that takes place in the Yellowstone area are two books from CJ Box. Back of Beyond from the Cassie Dewel series and Free Fire from the Joe Pickett series.

Back of Beyond (Goodreads link)

Free Fire (Goodreads link)

Agree with this. I think Lonesome Dove is the best novel I've ever read-hated to see it end. His prequel and sequel were good but not on same level, good for background and continuation of Dove. Blood Meridian was flat out weird

Do yourself a favor and read all four books in the Lonesome Dove series. Read them in chronological order of the story line which is not the order in which they were published.
