NFL long snapper Jake McQuaide was escorted out of a church in Ohio by police over the weekend after he confronted a member of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati during Mass over allegations that a priest used a parish-owned computer to access pornography.

The incident unfolded at Our Lady of the Visitation in Green Township on Saturday when Archdiocese of Cincinnati Chancellor Jason Williams addressed parishioners during Mass regarding the recent accusations against the Rev. Martin Bachman, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Williams read a letter from Archbishop Robert Casey in which he said all concerns "have been investigated, and no wrongdoing either criminally or ecclesiastically has been substantiated" against Buchman or the parish’s pastor, Don Siciliano.

"Furthermore, recent rumors, for which no corroborating facts have been uncovered, are unsubstantiated," the letter continued. "Rumors which quickly spiral out of control have the potential to severely harm the good reputation which each of us should enjoy. Consequently, like gossip, the spreading of rumors is sinful, and we should all work to overcome this tendency of our fallen human nature."

Casey noted that the Green Township Police Department confirmed to the archdiocese that there was "no evidence or investigation of criminal wrongdoing by Fr. Bachman." The letter also noted there are no ongoing "ecclesiastical investigations."

But during Williams’ address, McQuaide stood up from his pew to demand more clarity.

"Please take a second. We want to put these rumors to rest. Can you answer this for me, fact or fiction?" McQuaide was heard saying in a video obtained by WCPO. Someone in the video is heard responding, "This is not the time for this," but McQuaide continues.

"I’m sorry, sir, this is the time and the place. I will stand up."

quote:

One parishioner told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he filed a complaint with the archdiocese after allegedly seeing images on the parish computer "that included thumbnail links to adult pornography sites and other sites with explicit content." While the man said the images appear legal, he believed they violated parish rules.

In his letter, Casey said Bachman will take a "previously planned sabbatical" in July.

At least it was adult porn. That's an improvement I guess.

It's really just unnatural to expect these people to remain unmarried and celibate. It attracts a lot of weirdos. The catholic church needs to change its stance on that.

so they investigated the rumors and found nothing or there was no evidence and conducted no investigation? Poorly written article. Journalism is dead.

Certainly the time and place to address something like this. Completely normal behavior.

The church has a 2,000 year history and just now it is a problem?

Here is a quote from St Paul to remind everyone of one of the reasons this tradition remains today:

quote:

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided.

This new age of technology presents new challenges, specifically on this topic, but the solution is not to change a 2,000 year old tradition and belief because following the moral teaching of the church is a little more difficult.

you realize that the celibacy of priests does not go back to Paul right? That happened much later on.

And it happened because of the exact reason Paul talked about. Priests were more concerned with their families than the church .

So did he look at porn or not? Modern journalism sucks. It sounds like it’s just a word of mouth rumor from a random individual. Is it true or just an attempt to slander?

If it’s child porn, he should be arrested and removed from the priesthood.

If it’s normal adult porn, he night need to be disciplined and go to confession, but I don’t think he should be removed from the priesthood. 95% of human adults have committed the sin of looking at porn at some point in their life.

I think the response from the diocese was vague, and that's part of the problem.

No wrongdoing criminally? Ok, that's easy to understand.

No wrongdoing ecclesiastically? Hard to know what that means. I think the NFL guy may have picked the wrong time to address his concerns, but the response from the diocese is vague enough that I can understand his concern, especially given the church's history of protecting pedophile priests.

It’s a good thing, then, that the Church is a supernatural institution.

Poor taste by Jake McQuaide to do this during a Mass. There are proper channels where priests behavior can be reported and investigated.

Maybe. Protestant churches have the same problems on a large scale and they do not have a celibacy requirement. Does the clergy attract weirdos or do people become weird after entering the clergy? Same question for teachers who risk their families, careers and freedom to have sex with underage people. Are they drawn to teaching because they have unfettered access to children or does constantly being around children change them to the point of making irrational decisions with massive consequences to fulfill a weird fantasy?

If adult porn attracts “weirdos” then this place is as weird as it gets.

I’m not sure how they justify saying it was not the time or place to discuss the allegations when the church specifically made it the time and place by reading a press release during mass.
