Do laugh tracks / audience laughter condition us to think that things are funny?

Yes, no different than going to a comedy show. You will laugh more within a group than you will alone, just human nature.

People can shite on that show all they want. I have always enjoyed it.

Friends was never funny WITH the laugh track. Why would it be funny without it?

Mute the sound and watch how fast everyone talks. Nothing like real life.

These “gotcha” videos are crap. “Audience” sitcoms are directed and cut to allow for the laughter. Of course it will seem painfully mistimed, awkward, and unfunny if you insert dead air in place of the laughter.

Friends isn’t in my top 50 sitcoms of all time, but even I think this is an unfair comparison.

Comics can get hecklers and boos because of booze but its the booze in the collective audience that gets the comic on stage, and the laughs. People desperately want to laugh at comedy shows and the booze helps.

Has anyone really had comedy show laughing while watching Friends? Or does the laugh track do the work for you like a crutch or blankie?

Isn't scientific but people are generally lazy and lazier when watching TV; ergo Pavlov dog laugh track shows like Two Broke Girls become hits and awful comfort food....with Probably the most egregious and non-discriminating use of that incessant laugh track after every piece of dialogue uttered.

The long pauses where the laugh track would be inserted makes the scenes seem more awkward than they really are. It fricks up the comedic typing and makes it seem less funny.

If you don’t like Friends you have no sense of humor. It’s hilarious.

Can you do Halloween without the music now?
Let me know how that works out for that movie.

Was never a super fan but Friends definitely had something. It was rinse and repeat but damn good at it.

Friends and Seinfeld are both top 5 sitcoms of all time. However, I hate laugh tracks and will take shows like modern family and the office all day over those with tracks.

Watched the first clip and chuckled quite a bit.

Friends was filmed before a live audience. There wasn’t a laugh track.

Yeah, the long pauses people in this thread are commenting on were often the actors waiting for the live audience to stop laughing. Yes, some of it was prompted, but having seen one filmed live it was fairly genuine. Now BBT on the other hand...

I disagree with that. I do still enjoy it from time to time. But it definitely feels dated and I don’t laugh near as much as I used to. But it is still a good show, especially to just have on in the background and not have to pay attention to. What’s crazy to me is how beloved it is with kids in their late teens and early 20s. That show really hit a new stride once it got popular again on NF.
