Article on Nola.com saying the private toll collector is charging 4 percent convenience fee.

My question is, is there a way to fund your toll account without using a credit card sbd thus avoid the fee? Can you mail a check or go to an office and pay in cash?

I’ve also read the causeway and the bridge to grand isle don’t charge this fee.

Didn’t cc companies use to pull their business if they found out companies did this? Wish that would come back.

cost of everything would just go up 3-5%. It's here to stay.

Exactly just build it into the price and move on.

The rub is that the Causeway and La. 1 Toll Bridge do not charge this fee.

I know this because I recently decided to purchase a GeauxPass.

Knowing that I may cross the Belle Chasse bridge at some point.

I just wish Louisiana got onboard with the multi state tolling to use your GeauxPass in other places like Texas. But first, we need to settle the issue with the Causeway where they make you setup a separate funding account just for the causeway but use the same tag for all three bridges.

So here is the roundabout way to go around the fee. Just open an La. 1 account that has no fee. Now they may still get you if you want to get the Plaquemines Parish resident rate.

4% of a $3toll is twelve cents.

Come on.

It’s already there. The restaurants already have these fees built into the cost of goods sold, they’re just jacking prices up another 3% to profit more.

Yeah, restaurants are fricking killing it. Basically printing money.

People think they close down so often because of tight margins and finding labor. In reality is the owners become multimillionaires and close to retire.

That’s not what the residents of the parish are upset about

They’re upset because their parish has to pay over $800 million for a bridge that costs less than $200 million

Then, on top of that, a couple years ago when the parish’s council voted on whether or not to pursue litigation on the deal, they, led by Councilman Beau Black fought AGAINST getting the parish a fair deal and stuck us with it.

Once everything was signed, sealed, and delivered, Black was magically hired by the same entity that he worked hand in hand with to stick the parish with the deal - Shawn Wilson and the DOT. He got selected for a prominent job with them and left his post as councilman. Strange how that works huh???

I hate to break this to you, but the 3% ish charge is from the Visa, Amex, MC and Discover networks, which is passed on to the processor, which the merchant is simply passing onto you. Most merchants also get charged a per transaction fee on top of that, which is why a lot of places said you couldn't use a card for a transaction of less than $5 or $10. The (D) passed a bill a few years back which made it illegal to do that, among other things, and now you explicitly see the fee that was hidden before.

I bet you think roads are free, too.

I wrote about this in another thread.

I tried to pay my “fee” by several means, including using a debit account and whichever method I chose they would add a flat $1.49 convenience fee to my bill, so it’s not a CC fee.

I wouldn’t. Debit transactions are way cheaper for merchants than credit transactions. I don’t think it makes much sense to socialize folks’ travel miles, cash back, and other CC rewards.

That said, I’m not sure it makes any difference in the case of the OP. Sounds like that’s a fee being collected by the third party contracted to handle all payments rather than a true credit card processing fee.

I wish the CC companies wouldn't raise their fees.

Plate recognition.
No human toll-takers.
No inspection stickers.

But no, let's just stay in the 80s.

Let's say the fee is one thing on June 30th but starting July 1st, the fee has increased.

You own a convenience store or any small business. Are you now going to reprice all of your items overnight or just charge extra for credit card users while you slowly increase price on things?

You are probably just going to charge the fee until you figure shite out.

As far as the toll goes the convenience fee is to cover the merchant fees for credit cards when their usual method of collecting is with cash at the booth. Where this gets tricky would be if they only allowed you to pay with a credit card and still charged a fee. I don't think that is legal in most states.
