MTG championing rollback of HVAC refrigerant restrictions

If tweet fails to load, click here. Had to spend like $7k a couple years ago completely changing one of my 2 A/C units (the smaller one) both of which are less than 20 years old because it used refrigerant which is now restricted.
Ever since any time I have a minor issue with the A/C I’m paranoid it’s going to be the same deal with the other one.
This is crap, we should be able to repair major appliances and not be mandated to replace them at nearly $10K or more by the government.

The never refrigerants are not as energy efficient as the previous ones
You will use more kW/h for same cooling. But they are better “green” gases

That said, doubtful manufacture's are going to change back because in 4 years they might have to do it all over again. And its not like its them paying the bill anyway; its us.

IMO this shite matters.
They claim these things have a higher global warming potential.
I experienced this with one of these piece of shite new refrigerators.
And if you are running an old unit, you will have to replace with a shittier new unit to take the newer refrigerant.

I have delayed replacement of an HVAC bc of refrigerant uncertainty.
My HVAC guy told me that there was no real difference in the new proposed refrigerant and the current except for compatibility with existing units.

I know the answer to this has to be no, but is there not a way to make machines a little future proof against this? Refrigerant is a liquid or gas, they can’t just circulate around in every machine?

Each refrigerant has a different critical pressure and temperature (point of phase change). The components need to be designed for those pressures. So I think the answer to your question is no, but it’s been over 30 years since my refrigeration chapter in heat transfer lab.

The real reason is HVAC manufacturers lobbying for the changes under the guise of “green energy” It’s textbook rent - seeking behavior on the part of manufacturers.

Because the compressor and refrigerant needs to match.
A compressor for R-134a will likely not work for R-22.
