Why did people in the 60-70s look like they were in their 40s in their 20s?

Buddy of mine sent me this (great Stan Rogers song) and it struck me how middle aged they all look even though they are in their 20s at the time.

Is it that our young people these days look younger, or did people back then just look older?

Oh, you mean no one talks in the style of an 18th century shantyman? In a video from 50 years ago?

Any more brilliant insights?

Think we have had these threads before. Short answer is drugs and smoking in general will age you. A lot more of that back then.

Saw a picture of my dad from 1988 today. He’s younger than me in the picture but looks like he’s 45.

I didn't know this until now but Stan Rogers (the bald one) died in a plane fire on the tarmac when he was only 33.

Sad.

Rubbin dirt on broken limbs.
Drinking out of the hose.
Riding in the bed of pickup trucks.
Pulling your uncle's finger.
Cig smoke during parent's card games with the aunts and uncles.

In all seriousness, the 40's was a rough time for all Americans. It was rougher for new moms and newborns.

We have perpetual young 20s now. It's sad really. People use to dress and act like...adults. Now it's just what the market wants, youth culture is sold to us. We dress down and act like teens in our 30s

By the time a child reached his twenties, he had spent hundreds if not thousands of hours in the sun, had several childhood diseases that have been largely eradicated, had one or more broken bones, been bitten by at least one stray dog, been doused repeatedly with DDT and been exposed to radioactive fallout from above ground nuclear tests. All that shite ages you.
