The premise of this post is not that Billy Cannon doesn’t deserve to have his number retired. The premise is that retiring numbers is a retarded practice in the first place.

No player should have his number retired. I can understand retiring the jersey and hanging it in the stadium to honor a player, but preventing future players from wearing the number is just stupid and totally unnecessary.

I for one would love to see future RBs, WRs, and DBs wear the number 20.

Also we need to stop preventing players from wearing either #9 or #5. That’s retarded too.

* Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

That's some highfalutin verbiage to display jersey number retirement control.

Numbers shouldn't be retired
Only jerseys

5, 9, and 20 are too clean to just never be worn again.

Of all things to waste time worrying about re LSU sports, retiring players' numbers don't even make my top 100 list.

If a Heisman is the standard we aren't going to run out of numbers.

If any number deserves retirement it is someone who: 1. Won a Heisman, and 2. Also won a national championship. Cannon and Burrow meet that category. I’m ok if nobody ever wears #20 and #9 again.

It’s up to the coach’s discretion & nobody gives a frick what cbree88 thinks about it.

Football Players can still wear #37, #21, & #4.

Winning the Heisman trophy seems like an adequate requirement to never let the jersey be worn again

Everyone knows 20 and 9. I didn't even know who 5 was until I looked it up.
