The NFC South has spent the better part of the last three years locked in mediocrity. Post-Drew Brees, post-Tom Brady, and now post-Derek Carr, the division has been a revolving door of transition and retooling. But if the latest offseason grades from Pro Football & Sports Network are any indication, three of the four teams have found a way to move forward with purpose. The one glaring exception? The New Orleans Saints.

The Saints literally got a new head coach, anything but Dennis Allen was an upgrade. Idiotic take

Derek Carr is gone. Upgrade

Offseason grades and evaluations are generally worthless.
We’ll see how each team’s moves play out in the season.

This is a weird statement. Part of the reason the Saints were adding to the mediocrity that’s the NFCS is because they were being led by Carr.

New Orleans feels caught in the middle: no longer a veteran-led contender, but not quite a full-blown rebuild.
If what they are doing is not considered a rebuild, I’d question if the author understands how teams set themselves up for rebuild. Especially when cap constraints restrict just how much you can flip a roster at once

Getting rid of Carr and Allen IS moving forward. It may not result in wins THIS year but at least we aren’t trying to hang on to the idea of being the worst division winner in the nfl, we’re actually moving forward in the long run.
It’s absolutely a rebuild, anyone saying it isn’t is being force fed some silly company line. You can put any meaningless qualifier you want “soft rebuild” “partial rebuild” or call it “retooling” if preferred but they’re still in a multi year process of turning the majority of the roster over.

This is a stupid take. Talent wise have they taken a step forward? This can be debated because you don't until after a couple of seasons how your draft went. Every other way they took a step forward by finally accepting that this team needs to be rebuilt and you have to get the cap fixed, so they are headed in the right direction.

Agree with all of that. The problem is the arsonist (Loomis) is now the fire fighter. It should never have come to this if he’d have realized the need for a rebuild immediately after Brees retired.
You’re in the 3rd inning of a lost decade plus of Saints football.

This offseason can not possibly be a failure for two simple facts.
1) Dennis Allen is not in the building
2) Derek Carr is not in the building
That alone makes it a positive.

AND his bloated contract.
Develop the recent Draft (last 2-3 yrs) position players, let the young QBs play, and posture the roster for additional cap flex in the out years. LFG.
