Every now and then it comes on in the background while doing stuff around the house and that show is cheesy as hell. It’s also very slow moving with very little police action scenes. It’s mind blowing to me that enough people watch to justify it running for its 27th season this fall.

If Lifetime Original Movies in the 90s taught me anything its the bizarre fact that women love stories about women getting raped.

Because it had a long run of great seasons before it began to deteriorate into a parody of itself. For both L&O and L&O SVU, if we're surfing and we see in the listing that the season number is in the 20's, we pass on it. Rules of thumb: Meloni left SVU after Season 12, Raúl Esparza left SVU in Season 19, Jesse L. Martin left L&O in Season 18, Jeremy Sisto left in Season 20 of L&O (after 20 seasons the wheels start to come off).

The greatest crime on SVU is that they now insist on making Mariska Hargitay unattractive when she's a great looking mature woman in real life.

Olivia Benson has become an iconic character to women across the country.

I made a thread about it in 2019

The year after SVU debuted, "Olivia" broke into the top 10 baby names for girls in the U.S. It climbed steadily until it became the number one name in 2019. It was still #1 in 2024. The number one name for boys in 2024 was the name of Olivia's son on SVU, "Noah".

Actor retention. If Hargitay or Ice T ever left I'm sure they'd end it. They've done a good job of making it feel like it's still the same show as it was 20 years ago.

Yeah. The past like 8 seasons have been retarded and a political statement.

My post from that thread:

The comments in this thread. Some of y’all are too much.

I like SVU but it’s more of a guilty pleasure watch. And reruns are great background TV when you’re busy doing other things (it was my go to background show for studying). I miss Stabler and the older cast.

I don’t think it’s really deeper than that. I just like some cop procedurals.

Still feels relevant to 2025 Belle. I don't care for the newer seasons or the newer cast and stopped watching a couple years back.

That said, I will absolutely watch the shite out of old Law and Order OG reruns.

Dick Wolf, besides the cool name, is a billionaire from this and a few other shows. It can't be that hard to produce these shows

Damn, the internet says Mariska gets $500,000 per episode. Twice as much as Ice-T. Allegedly .

As far as Dick Wolf police procedurals I prefer Chicago PD. They’ve had some cast turnover but overall they’ve done a good job reinventing themselves. It helps that Voigt is still there. Chicago Fire and Med are glorified soap operas though even though they are some of NBC’s most watched shows.

It’s is a very streamlined dopemine hit that feeds into our country’s sadistic infatuation with crime and punishment

Justice or the justice system in real life is (in most cases rightfully) slow, boring and without clear answers across the board. Law and order (and more specifically SVU) give you a very clear cut evil to point to and then ultimately punish. Which has cleared the path for our extremely unhealthy true crime obsession/industry.

This. American culture is morally bankrupt and just feeds off of shite like that. It's a huge dopamine hit.
