Home Depot
on Tuesday stuck by its full-year sales forecast as a top executive told CNBC the retailer doesn’t plan to hike prices because of tariffs.

“Because of our scale, the great partnerships we have with our suppliers and productivity that we continue to drive in our business, we intend to generally maintain our current pricing levels across our portfolio,” Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail told CNBC in an interview.

More than half of what the company sells comes from the U.S., he said. McPhail added that Home Depot and its suppliers have worked to diversify the source of the company’s imports over the past several years, including by decreasing the share of purchases that come from China. By this time next year, no single country outside of the U.S. will represent more than 10% of the company’s purchases, he said
.

Absolutely -- Big Box home improvement stores are often outrageously expensive... but I'll do more business at Home Depot.

"The decision to keep prices the same — at least for now — also comes as a sluggish housing market causes the retailer’s sales to stagnate".

Richard McPhail will be raising prices soon enough.

When his stores start operating at a loss, of course he will. But right now, he's right and a lot of Home Sepot and Lowes stuff is produced domestically or in Mexico or Canada.

It's always interesting to me to see the low value stuff that isn't made in China - there is a good bit in that consumer home improvement space that is made here or in Mex. Not that it's low quality, it's just the type of thing you'd think would be made in China.

Another area where I've been surprised to see this: Kids toys. So many cheap plasticky kids toys, push cars, playhouses, etc. are made here. A good thing, just something I'm surprised hasn't been completely consumed by China.

They’ll raise prices.

They aren’t going to eat price increases from their suppliers.

Of course he will. If you read between the lines he's just saying they're going to do it gradually if they need to so as not to piss off customers.

Interesting phenomena occurs whenever there's a downturn in new housing construction. Home Depot's performance during a downturn will depend on a complex interplay of factors.

On the one hand, homeowners tend to improve their homes during these downturns, buying appliances, flooring, cup grading AC systems, etc... Conversely, new homeowners purchase lots of landscaping, paint, window treatments, cleaning and yard supplies, tools, appliances, etc.. So, how HD handles the market determines their business cash flow. They might, as the article implies, stagnate, but I bet they don't go down in business, overall.

But if they make efforts to reduce their stock/supplies made internationally and replace them with American made products, that's a good thing. Right?

Look at all the "free market" bros who were wrong about tariffs desperately try to downplay positive news. They can't be happy with good news that benefits Americans. Being "right" is more important to them.
