I busted a gut fellas.

About 3 years ago, my inny turned into an outy. The Dr. said not to worry about it if it is not bothering me or causing pain. I lived with it.

Well, a couple of months ago, I got sick and had a bad coughing fit. I felt it rip more. I went from on outy to a half a golf ball on my belly button. Now I have pain, general discomfort, and it's hard to squish it back in whereas it would slip back in easy before.

I assumed they'd give you a local and fix it, but they said they have to knock me out. I'm a little nervous as I've never been put to sleep before. They scheduled me for surgery in June, so I was just looking to get advice if you've had one fixed about how the procedure went, how long were you in pain afterwards, when did you return to work?

I had umbilical hernia in 2019 (golf ball bump to right of my belly button) actually happenned in Austin for Joe burrow Texas game

Surgery was easy, I was back to normal within a day or 2. I can’t remember exactly, but it goes without saying you shouldn’t lift anything or do anything super physical for a few weeks after. I never experienced any pain whatsoever after the surgery or even when it was poking out before the surgery. Just a painless lump

I got mine from lifting some really heavy stuff by myself, but it didn’t pop out til a couple days later

He went in through my belly button so I don’t even have a visible scar or anything

Nothing to be concerned with… super routine and very common surgery

I had one at 20 years old back when I weighed 145.
Recovery wasn't more than a few days. No heavy lifting for a month.

That makes me feel better about it.

That's how I originally did mine. Years of people telling me "don't pick that up by yourself" and me trying to be a tough guy caught up with me.

Early 2000's had one. Laparoscopic route was fairly new then, but was told there was a 60% chance of reoccurrence. Only advantage was shorter recoup time.

Went with the "knock me out and install mesh in there" route. Was down for a full week, then as stated, no heavy lifting. No issues since then.

I definitely learned my lesson in lifting extremely heavy stuff by myself. Not worth the hernia

I had one repaired in 2018, I did the laparoscopic route. It wasn’t bad, I cut the narco off earlier than I should have but I hate the way I feel when taking it.

I lived with the hernia for about 10 years before it started bothering me.

I haven’t had any issues.

ETA: proper medical terminology for the medical nerds.

I had it done a few years ago. They did my with a scope and three small incisions on my side. Surgery was a breeze but recovery sucked. Be VERY careful with post op nausea. The pain pills made me sick and there's nothing worse than dry heaving after abdominal surgery.

Funny story… that particular year when I had mine I was really health-diet conscious and I thought the lump was from Mexican food at Matt’s el rancho in Austin… because I hadn’t eaten Mexican food for a few months prior and after that dinner that night is when the lump popped up

I showed it to someone and they immediately said… that ain’t from dinner, you’ve got a hernia

My father had a hernia repair at 88. It was a piece of cake. Don't be afraid of anesthesia They'll knock you out, then bring you around rather quickly. You won't be out for more than 30-45 minutes. . . at most. My dad came out of anesthesia asking for a cup of coffee and telling jokes.

I had my right inguinal and an umbilical hernia repaired a few years ago and since then my left inguinal has been both herniated and repaired.

The only problem I had was my pancreatitis flared up the day of the left fix and I now have a ventral hernia above my belly button like you describe your umbilical one ( the closing sutures gathered up like pulling a loose thread on a sock or shirt sleeve and healed that way while I was doubled over in pain for several days) it’s a pointy lump overhang made up of the underside fatty tissue of the skin.

In essence I have both my inny and an outy.

Honest question are you overweight?

The more intro abdominal fat (meaning internal to abdominal wall) that you have the more likely a repair is to fail or reoccur.

They do not repair hernia with endoscopy. That’s like impossible.

I had one in my mid 20s but didn’t know what it was. Figured it was just a tumor or something. In my mid 30s it got worse so I got it fixed. Non mesh. No problems since.

Ok, apologies for the wrong medical terminology, I’m just a dumb construction guy.

I had a Laparoscopic repair.
