Bill banning cell phones in Alabama public schools signed into law
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The bill banning cell phones in Alabama’s public schools is now law.
Gov. Kay Ivey put her signature on the FOCUS Act on Wednesday. The law requires students’ phones to be turned off and stored off their person during school hours.
“Smart phones have beneficial roles when used in proper settings. However, these often-disruptive devices have no place in our classrooms during the school day except for educational purposes or during an emergency,” Ivey said. “The FOCUS Act will enable students to ‘focus’ on learning while in school rather than on their phones.”
The bill does contain exceptions for children with health issues that necessitate the use of a cell phone. For example, diabetics who monitor their blood sugar with a mobile app or students with personalized education plans.
Some schools already ban the use of devices, but the FOCUS Act will require all school systems to do so, leaving it up to the schools to decide how the devices will be stored.

Missouri is considering a similar bill.
Good idea. Hope they actually do it.

Will be difficult to enforce but I'm all for it. Cell phones and social media are terrible for everyone and especially for kids.

Good thing they're typically well-disciplined.

Suspensions will go up, and hopefully test scores.

My sister teaches at a private school and this has always been their policy. Glad it's a law for public schools now.

I predict doctors are going to be pretty busy diagnosing all kind of new problems.

It was the policy at the charter our kids went to as well. It could probably be the policy at any school in our district if the principals were willing to take the heat.

In Silicon Valley, the Waldorf School of the Peninsula is the most well-known and highly regarded Waldorf school. It has campuses in both Los Altos and Mountain View. The school is known for its unique educational philosophy that emphasizes a hands-on, experiential approach to learning, with a focus on creativity and imagination, and a deliberate avoidance of technology in the classroom.
The people making millions developing/selling the technology flooding classrooms across the country send their kids to a school that deliberately avoids technology in the classroom.

Solid book? No. It needs to be required reading for everyone. It's one of the most important books to be published the last 20 years.

Mee Maw laying down the law.
As a dude getting up there in age, some of the attachment to phones and social media is difficult to comprehend. Its biology class, you have to write notes and memorize them to pass the test.

My sons school albeit private has this policy.. you’re allowed to have it but if seen they can and will confiscate.. big fan of this as a phone is completely unnecessary during school time..

As a parent of a kid that had their phone taken away by the school, it is pretty easy to enforce.

Will it be like smoking at school, where kids do get away with it, sure. Those are the exceptions though, and the no phone policy is easily enforced. To not enforce it, would require schools to just flat ignore the law, which of course is always a possibility with crappier districts.
