PSA to anyone with an F-150 or Expedition that is annoyed by this:

Open your driver's side door and look above where your left foot rests when driving. There's 3 plug-ins that are visible. Unplug the smallest. Best I can tell it controls the auto start/stop and trailer brakes. Did it 5 years ago, and have not had an issue since.

The auto shut-off at a stoplight is the stupidest fricking thing, all it does is speed up how fast you’ll have to get something replaced in your engine from constantly stopping and starting

I always figured this has got to be bad for the life of the car. Restarting all the time in stop and go traffic has to add wear, right?

Can I get confirmation on this?

My habit is to hit the off button as soon as I crank my truck.

Good. That thing is annoying as hell.

Can we also remove the requirement that X% of refined fuel must contain ethanol?

I just press the button on the dash when I start my truck. Seems like a better solution than just unplugging something that you don’t really know what it’s controlling

I had a new 23 Crostrek last year that had that bull crap. It drove me insane and almost made me get into several accidents. Unfortunately in November someone hit me and totaled by car. But after that idle crap I won’t get another car that has it.

I bought a 98 pickup instead

This. Wears out the starter and crankshaft exponentially faster. Doesn't save nearly enough fuel to warrant the feature. And it's annoying as frick. If a rental I get has the feature I disable it.

While i'm not a fan of the SS, it doesn't add any increased wear. It only works when engine oil is warm enough and the oil has already been pumped completely throughout the system. It maybe wears out a starter or something depending on how the restart is accomplished. I think some cars fire off a spark plug to get the engine turning again.

I will say it does save a lot of gas in my wife's car.

They need to create a module like the VCM muzzler/tuner for Honda that plugs into a harness right off the battery and disables it. There’s a way to hack it by removing part of the dashboard, but that’s too involved for many people.

What they don't know is i bought a wire/chip that goes between that button and the ECU and turns it off every time i start the car.

Cold starts are where the vast majority of engine wear occurs. the SS only happens when the oil is warm enough and the engine is already lubricated. The reduction in engine revolutions over the life of the engine should prolong the engine life but other ancillary devices like alternators, compressors, starters, etc may not like the added starts. Maybe it is harder on batteries?

You sound like a terrible driver.

Maybe just Uber everywhere...plus, it'll give you someone to talk with...

A dumb and annoying idea at the outset. Zeldin has got it right.

This is the US trying to model the European model of what “going green” looks like; their vehicles have had it for years if not decades.
FWIW my older Acura came with it too but instead of an on/off button on the dash it’s embedded in the settings menu. I turned it off once and have forgotten about it. Wife’s new Odyssey Elite has the button on the dash. Aggravating
