Was having a drink at the bar with an associate. His drink was empty. The bartender was nice looking young woman in her 20's or so. She was walking around the bar to the seating area.

I hollered out. When you get a minute, could we get another round over here Honey? She nodded her head.

My associate scolded me and claimed that it was offensive to him that I called her Honey, and when she served the drinks he apologized to her for me calling her Honey.

And I am like stunned.

So I decided to come to a bunch of strangers on the internet to seek their thoughts on this life changing issue.

It's more likely that none of that happened.

Sounds like a liberal, offended on behalf of someone else

Tell him to drink his wine cooler/Zima and mind his own fricking business. He doesn't need to be offended for her. She's an adult and can clearly let you know if she prefers not to be called that.

When she delivered the second round you should have said, Thank you, sweetheart.

You should have said, "I'm sorry if I upset you, sweetie."

To him.

It wouldn’t be offensive if you weren’t creepy and yelling at here when she was doing something else.

I wouldn’t call a random woman I don’t know “honey”.

I also wouldn’t get in a twist over someone else doing it. Does your coworker have light blue hair and a man purse?

It's not offensive, but it is presumptive and a little condescending.

Some people dislike nicknames. Nothing wrong with that. Some people see nicknames as endearing. Nothing wrong with that. It's easier to just stick to actual names.

You should have ask her if she was offended.
When she said no, tell your friend to get over it.

It's not offensive, but I'd read the room first and the younger they are the more likely they will be offended. He should have ignored it or passive aggressively made fun of you by calling her sugar cakes. He was lame for appollogizing.
