White House 2026 budget plan includes proposal to phase out funding for NASA rocket

quote:

The Trump administration on Friday teased potential cuts to NASA's lunar mission next year as part of its skinny budget, including phasing out funding for an upcoming rocket program it called "grossly expensive an delayed."

Grossly expensive, delayed and absurdly obsolete is more like it. It's more of a politically based jobs program than a space program.

Good. The private sector is doing it better. If we want to encourage space travel, it's time to give money to SpaceX, Virgin, Bezos' thing, whatever else.

NASA can’t function anyway now that Trump fired all the black ladies that got us to the moon

Rocket funding should be given to the Space Force.

This was going to happen whether Trump was elected or not.

I want to see us return to the Moon, but NASA has to be more efficient if they’re going to do it. It can’t be an endless money pit.

If we have learned anything over the years, the president's budget never really makes it far in Congress.

Guessing Alabama and Louisiana will be lobbying hard to protect these programs

lol how do you expect large returns with little investment? Discovery and development costs money. We’re behind in technology because we don’t invest in it anymore. Our country grew to its heights because we poured in to our development with higher taxes.

As I type this 8 people have down voted you. But I have to ask myself why. Look at what is going on in the private sector versus NASA. Anyone who compares the advancements in the private sector versus the government sector can see clearly that the private sector is far and away better and far more efficient.

Not by pouring it down a grossly expensive obsolete drain that is not reusable.

That whole Artemis program sounded like it had become a giant hot mess of Frankensteinian proportionss.

Because Trump is mean. If he increased funding they’d be whining “Don’t we have problems to fix here on earth?!? Why do want to go to the moon again anyway!!!!!!!!!!1”

A ton of scientific innovations and discoveries were made during the initial space race that contributed massively to every day society and America’s growth as a technological and commercial super power. Even though the actual going to the moon had no tangible benefits.

You can tell the same story about a wide variety of research institutions and programs that we poured money into. The stated goal of the program seems to be irrelevant or not beneficial, but while the research is ongoing into random bread bacteria you discover pennicilin.

People who want to cut funding to everything that doesn’t have an obvious super tangible benefit as its stated goal have forgotten (or never realized) how so many technological and scientific innovations and discoveries are made.

We’re getting lapped by Asia and even Europe now because we’ve stopped funding things.

It is still a money issue. The lion's share of the private sector funding for most space projects comes from NASA/the Fed.

So when politicians support NASA programs that benefit themselves politically, is that a conflict of interest?

As a taxpayer, in this case, what's good for Elon is what's good for us.

NASA needs to get out of the low earth orbit and moon business. Private and military have that covered . I’d like to see NASA explore with rovers and such the outer solar system. Thinking moons of Jupiter and such. Or, any place where we can find large amounts of water.
