Hoping the Papal Conclave is finished by then and a new pope is getting to be old news.
However, we are planning for packed airports and big crowds at the regular tourist locations. Wife will be crushed if Vatican tour is cancelled.

Hope it works out for you.
The Vatican is an amazing place, but there are plenty of other things to do in Rome other than the Vatican.
Don't worry about the crowds. I was there for Pope Frances' Easter Sunday mass at the Vatican when he was fairly new on the job. The Vatican was packed, but other than that it was business as usual around town. Rome is a big enough city to absorb the Vatican crowds,

Clients go in ten days and their vatican tour was already canceled

Yeah, I feel you. Big crowds and packed airports are pretty much a guarantee during this time. Hopefully, the Vatican tour doesn’t get canceled, it’d be such a bummer, especially if you’ve been looking forward to it. Just be ready for long lines and maybe book some skip-the-line tickets if you can.

Mine was scheduled for May 27 and they canceled it two days after Francis died..I'm still angry. Refuse to rebook at the current prices.

It is a tough year to go see Italy even without the pope situation. It is the year of jubilee. This occurs every 50 years and draws a lot of pilgrims to the vatican.

In Rome now. Sistine was canceled, rest of Vatican tours open. Went to a Vatican atea that was closed for quite sometime. Our tour leader was astonished by the contents. Really beautiful. South Korean tour groups such. Zero sense of space. Constantly taking selfie or glamor shots. Clogging up the tour lines of travel. Luigi our tour leader was trying to be courteous. But they wouldn't move. Went into Madri Gras mode and plowed through those fu kers Lead out 5 other small group behind me. They wouldn't listen or understand Vatican security. Once pass the horde it was great.

On the train ride back to Roma from Pompeii. Pompeii was really good. Bring hiking boots, a lot of uneven walkways

The Catholic Church charging to walk into a church is right about what I’d expect

I found a different site offering a good deal, so I'm re-booked for June 2. Went from second day of trip to the last day of my trip. Kinda like that the Sistine Chapel will be the last thing we see.

I wouldn't spend much time in Rome. I'd head fo Florence. Way more to see and do. You could spend 2 weeks there and still not get to see it all.

Looking to book a Vatican tour for November, family of 5. Private tours are $860 for thr 5 of us, no way that’s worth it to have my kids fighting each other in the middle of a group of old ladies trying to revel in the Vatican. But it looks like the direct skip the line tickets and direct tours open ‘around 60 days’ with no clear plan? We have 2 maybe 3 days we could do it Thanksgiving week, is it likely we get in without an issue? I can find some tickets for July, so doesn’t seem like a major issue? With it being a jubilee year my wife is nervous

I see that it is about time for the OP’s trip. I would assume that it is back to business as usual at the Vatican now.
Tell them you want the Home Boy’s treatment in honor of the Pope’s 7th Ward grandparents.

YMMV,
But it is absolutely worth it. What is going to make kids a pain is standing in line, asking you what something is, how much longer, they are hot/cold/hungry.
A private guide is going to make your time much more enjoyable. The good ones will have your kids and you in the palm of their hand. They’ll glide you past lines with a wink to the guards and be able to explain things you’ll miss other wise.
It’s less than the cost to take your family to go watch a Saints Seahawks game in the dome.

You can still buy time stamped entrance tickets to the Vatican museum and Sistine chapel without a guide straight from the Vatican. You can also buy tours with a guide straight from the Vatican. Through the Vatican the Tours were about $30 each the total was $164 for the 5 of us. Through a 3rd party the cheapest I can find for our dates is $862 total.
If it was just my wife and I, absolutely I'd do it. But its just not worth that much money to be there for 3-4 hours with my kids and they will be 7-12.
Everything online says the vatican website sucks, and it does.

You know your kids best. Took my two 11 and 9 at the time last year and the guide made the whole visit.
PS we booked a private guide through Viator and not the Vatican website. Was around $609 for 4.

We leave Tuesday. Wife says our Vatican/Sistene tours for next Thursday are still on and confirmed. But wife takes things for granted — I’m not so optimistic. So if we get stiffed, it’s on her.
Next Sunday we board Royal Caribbean for the Greek isles and then Pompeii.
But the real adventure starts on our way back when we have a long layover in NEWARK!!! Wish us luck in Jersey.
Edit. We’re also using Viator for Vatican and Colosseum.
