Why do people claim that there are more than 2 genders?

Because it makes them feel special when they say they are something that most other people don't say they are. That's really the core of it. Lack of attention as a child, so they do outrageous things like claim they are a 47th gender to get that attention from others because they lacked getting it when they were a kid.
They know this riles people up, so it's the only way they can get that desperately wanted mass attention.

Ironically, it was prudish, repressed people who didn't want to use the word "sex" to refer to "human sexual characteristics" that allowed for the silly opening to use "gender" (frankly, a linguistic concept) for biological sex.
Personality traits are not gender and they're definitely not biological sex. If a big gal grows up in Sulphur, Louisiana, and likes to hunt, fish, wear flannel in the cool months, has a nice job at Citgo and is married to another woman - that does NOT make her a man. That's a lesbian living her best life.
Somehow, the progressive left lost the plot on that and drove off the rails on a crazy train.

And in the social sciences, unhindered from reality people come up with more and more stupid crap to get their PhD and papers published.

Because, if there were only 2 genders then everyone would have to accept the fact that none of yall are special. We all are in the same boat, despite what your grandma, mom, or other gay friends tell you. No one's special.
