Whistleblower claims 'Meta' helped China develop advanced AI

Meta actively helped China in the race to develop artificial intelligence as part of its failed effort to cozy up to Beijing, a former executive-turned-whistleblower said during a bombshell Senate hearing on Wednesday.
Sarah Wynn-Williams, who detailed her experience at Meta in the scathing memoir “Careless People,” testified that she witnessed Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other executives lie to Congress and “repeatedly undermine US national security and betray American values.”
During her opening statement, Wynn-William, Facebook’s former director of global public policy, told lawmakers that Meta began providing briefings to the Chinese Communist Party “as early as 2015” while pursuing “Project Aldrin” – a top-secret effort to gain access to China’s lucrative market.
"These briefings focused on critical emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence – explicit goal being to help China outcompete American companies,” said Wynn-Williams, who worked at the social media giant from 2011 to 2017.
“There’s a straight line you can draw from these briefings to the recent revelations that China is developing AI models for military use, relying on Meta’s Llama model,” she added.

Wynn-Williams said Meta’s AI model Llama “has contributed significantly to Chinese advances in AI technologies like DeepSeek” – which sparked a US tech selloff earlier this year after releasing a model on par with American rivals that it claims cost less than $6 million to train.
“The greatest trick Mark Zuckerberg ever pulled was wrapping the American flag around himself and calling himself a patriot and saying he didn’t offer services in China while he spent the last decade building an $18 billion business there,” Wynn-Williams said.

Nothing will happen.
Media always reports on what these whistleblowers have to say, and I don’t remember anything ever coming of any of it.

just finished “Careless People". Facebook is fricking evil. The first third of the book, they were clueless bumblefrick tech bros about their impact on society. Next phase was, "yeah, we know, but lets try to manage that some." Last third was "lets frick a pangolin! we love money! What's a little light treason?!?!". But every step of the way, regardless of mindset, self-awareness, or "ethos", the goal was always more users, more more more users, at any cost.

Isn't Zuck's wife of Chinese descent? Is it possible she is a CCP operative?

FB may indeed be evil. But I honestly cannot think of an international company that wouldn't be considered evil based on
I mean every large company wants to be bigger or the biggest and make the most/all of the money. So who isn't "evil" by such standards?
and why do all of these whistle blowers come out AFTER they are gone from teh company? Did she donate her salary or profits to charity? Seems odd she was silent while getting a check, but now its time to tell all. Seems disingenuous to me.

Mark Zuckerberg
If he is anything like his character in the social network then he is a shite bag. His idea for facebook did come from trying to get revenge on a girl who dumped him because he was an awkward frick.
He came off as a reject who causes his own problems and gets mad at everyone else so I can see that a-hole get mad at someone in the US government and thinks "I am going to show that frick. I am about to advance the shite out of China".

Within a year, Zuckerberg has completely changed his opinions and “personality” to appeal to conservatives

Stuff like this just shows how messy it really gets behind the scenes. Whistleblowers are pretty much the only reason we find out about these deals most of the time.
If you ever wondered how whistleblowing actually works when it comes to exposing fraud against the government (not just big tech stuff), this lays it out pretty clearly: https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/government-procurement-fraud-common-4808514/
