I have a 2016 F250 that started leaking oil yesterday, maybe a teaspoon full. I believe I have tracked it down to the upper oil pan gasket. I was quoted today to repair all gaskets and seals would be in the $8k range.

So heres my dilemma, I drive a camry as a daily driver and only use my truck to tow my boat (22’ Bay boat) and pull my SXS. So the truck is mainly parked until needed. Maybe used 4k miles per year. So do I sell the truck and take a hit due to the leak or keep running her and just refill oil when needed.

I have a Sequoia that will pull both when needed, but its the wife’s daily. Considering selling for what I can get and saving for another truck next year.

Thoughts?

From an operational perspective as long as it has oil pressure and it's cool enough, it can leak however much it wants forever and it'll still run.

For an $8k repair, I'd strap a pig mat to the SOB and change it out every now and then and not park it on the concrete, but I'm a cheap bastard.

BUT with this note

frickkkkkkkkkkkkkkk that leak. Just add oil every time you drive it.

I have a 2010 f250 super duty that does the same thing. Told me it was a front seal. I recall them saying the real deal was the far more expensive fix. Or vice versa. Anyway they quoted me $900 last year to replace the seal. I passed and have driven it not on two 1000 mile trips and around town and have t even had to add oil. No indication of any problem. I put cardboard in garage floor.

$8k is for replacing all the gaskets and seals. Why not just fix the oil pan gasket?

It’s not too difficult of a job and you could do it yourself for way less money. Just watch a few YouTube videos and you’re off to the races.

I had a 2016 f250 and it leaked some oil. It was a couple of loose bolts on the vacuum pump. The top 2 bolts had loosened up.I tightened them up and no more leak. Look up videos of it. Common problem. May not be your issue but it could be.

Have a 2016 f250 myself. Ford fixed the upper oil pan leak under warranty at about 90k miles. At about 170k it started leaking again (3-5 drops overnight). I’m at 235k now with no other issues so I just keep rolling it, I just don’t park it in the driveway.

Thats about what this is, maybe like teaspoon each spot I park. Its coming from above the lower oil pan, but the lower oil pan is covered in oil too. Like its been going on for a while which makes me confused because Ive never seen oil leaks before

My 2012 F250 has been leaking for years, probably about 80 or 90,000 miles. Mechanic said upper oil pan gasket. About 4-5 years ago. They would pull the cab, among other things. Said it would be in the 3-4000 dollar range.
I declined and just add oil when needed.

You buy a sheet ton of oil and blankets for $8K.
As long as oil pressure is good and isn’t overheating………

I have heard that adding brake fluid to your oil will cause the seals to sell and often stops the leak. I can’t vouch for that though.

Couple things - 8k for that repair is ridiculous. Done a couple and they were closer to 3k.

To those advising "you-tube and do it yourself" the transmission has to come out for access to all the bolts that hold the upper pan in place. Just FYI

And to the guy who suggested brake fluid. Sigh, no. Just no.

Considering selling it and I love that truck, but I just have a feeling it will continue to get worse the longer I delay. For the amount of time I actually use the truck, I just dont see the value in keeping it and letting it decline further in value.

So, you are thinking about spending $8,000 because your ten-year old truck leaked a teaspoon of oil one time?

You have to decide what type of person you are

If you stress out about this type of shite, sell it

If not, let it ride. It’s not gonna hurt anything the way it is

Man I just traded my 2012 in for the same exact thing. Had recently had the water pump and cab bushings replaced along with belt. Changed the starter on my own then the oil leaks got worse. Was quoted around $7,500 at local dealership as they have to drop the transmission etc to open it up and change all seals. Just couldn’t bring myself to drop that much on a 13 year old truck worth $14k on a good day. Mine had around 225k miles when it started leaking oil.
