So do you think Trumps tariffs will succeed in bringing back manufacturing to USA?

In a significant way, not a couple of factories. Upvote for yes, downvote for no. Comment if you like.

It will succeed in getting other countries to remove or reduce their tariffs. The rest we will just have to wait and see what they do with taxes.

It will return some manufacturing to the US while also lowering trade barriers to US goods and commodities.
No one is claiming all manufacturing is coming back.

Hopefully. I think the bigger goal is to reset the playing field and get trade deals favorable to the US. That will help pay off debt & make us more desirable for business

This is the end-game, IMO.
Rest of the world can’t afford to have us make our own stuff.

Who was asking for this?
Prior to Trump getting MAGA all creamy and sticking to the sofa over this shite, who wanted unskilled labor jobs brought back to the United States? Because make no mistake about it, that's primarily what these jobs are, and from a non-union market standpoint, they're worth about 17 or 18 dollars an hour. Once they're re-unionized (and they will be) they'll move off shore again.
For about the last 30 years or so, our economy has generally remained in the "good to outstanding" range. Why frick with it like this?
Who in the US wants these unskilled, low paying manufacturing jobs anyway? Rhetorical question. All these millions of Mexicans who aren't being deported will want them.

Absolutely
The American purchasing power is the golden egg. No global company is going to lose out on that market to an upstart US company. They are faced with
* Losing market share
* Permanent loss of consumers
* Reduction in prices
* Loss of status back home
None of which is a good outcome. Its also why Trump is fixing immigration first. Opening factories here, while importing workers doesnt really fix the problem. So opening factories and hiring American workers, is the double tap to the global-industrial complex

My concerns are:
- This could take years, if not a decade.
- If it's crappy, low-paying jobs, do we even want that work back here?

Most of those factories will be automated - this isn’t about jobs per say but about controlling essential supply chains so we aren’t dependent on our enemies

Unless Dems win (in 2028), absolutely
Posted on 4/4/25 at 3:27 pm to Cycledude
zero tariffs will be good for the world, and that is the goal

It's also about growing the tax base.
The current debt situation requires more than one line of attack.

The problem will be keeping it here long term. Many of these projects will take years to get off the ground and we know the next democrat president will rescind all of Trump's policies and send those factories back out of the country.

Yall are so dumb, countries don’t “have tariffs against us”
Posted on 4/4/25 at 3:28 pm to Pandy Fackler
You’re right. Our economy has literally been the strongest in the world. It makes no sense to screw around with it.
Trump has been obsessed with tariffs since the 90’s but has learned nothing from history. Does he really want to be another Herbert Hoover?

There may be a slight bump in mfg jobs at first, but quickly the declining GDP will wipe out any gains by increased rubber dog shite factory employees.
Which is exactly what happend under his last tariffs, and they cost over $800,000 per job.
$800k per job, and the Seals think it was a success.

And yet Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/BMW/Mercedes/Nissan are all in the factories they built years ago...
