Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) directed California to pursue “strategic partnerships” with foreign trading partners and is calling for California-made products to be exempted from the retaliatory tariffs targeting the U.S. in light of President Trump slapping massive tariffs on the majority of countries around the world.
“Donald Trump’s tariffs do not represent all Americans,’ Newsom said in a video that was released on Friday.
Newsom, in the brief clip, said that California, which is the planet’s fifth-largest economy and whose agriculture is the engine of the state economy, is looking to support “stable trading relationships around the globe,” adding that is why he directed his administration to find new “opportunities to expand trade and to remind our trading partners around the globe that California remains a stable partner.”
White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to The Hill’s sister network NewsNation that Newsom “should focus on out-of-control homelessness, crime, regulations, and unaffordability in California instead of trying his hand at international dealmaking.” LINK

I won't disagree with Milton. He is correct. It is obvious that tariffs are a tax on imported goods we buy....in the long term
But this blurb or quote doesn't cover all situations when dealing with tariffs on our exports. Also this tariff war is to get countries to reduce or remove their tariffs. I do not believe that DJT plans on keeping these in place.
I have to wonder if DJT decided to not do a straight reciprocal and when with a huge tariff to make the other country be more decisive. From what I read it seemed like the trade deficit to each country is what determined the tariff, and wasn't just a 1 to 1 reciprocal tariff.

Reducing consumer choice isn't that big of a deal in America where we have more choices than anyone if the outcome is a stronger middle class. I'm not only interested in squeezing the most money out of the economy. The problem with "experts" is that they look at everything solely through the lens of their own discipline. For economists, it's how to make the most money possible. How that money is distributed or used is irrelevant as long as the overall system keeps growing. It's not a practical viewpoint.
Also, where are the choices for people who want to purchase domestically? Crowder tried to find a US supplier to make his mugs, but thanks to globalism, there were no US manufacturers capable of producing the numbers. Why is his choice not considered?
If someone can buy a US car for $25k before tariffs and they can buy a US car for $25k after tariffs, then how did they lose purchasing power?
If a company moves their manufacturing to the US, how has the consumer choice changed?
You're being selective in what variables you want to consider. You think every action can and will only ever have a single reaction, and that's just not the way things work.
