With the cost of imported stuff rising due to additional tarriffs being levied, consumers are faced with the choice of having to pay more for the things they want or simply stop purchasing as much.

will you pay more for the stiff you want or just not buy as much stuff?

No. I will "put off" some purchases until this is over. I will refuse to pay more when I know I am paying a 30% tariff. That is just reality.

If tariffs stay in place for a significant period of time inflation will hit and we will be paying more for everything. There will be no avoiding it.

A combination. Wants will be put off until this clusterfrick is over if I notice a marked price increase. Needs will be purchased at the same level of quality I would have purchased before at whatever price I have to pay to acquire it.

But I also appreciate that comes from a place of financial security that the majority of people in this country don’t experience.

Imagine the choices being pay more or buy less and thinking it’s a positive outcome…

Exactly, and I believe MANY consumers will have a similar approach. The deterioration in purchasing & confidence could lead businesses to pare or at least delay investments and new hires, consumers to delay purchases, and for financial risk assets, such as equities, to decline or increase in volatility.

I heard DT say last evening 'two years'. It will be interesting to see what the voters think during the mid-terms....

I really feel for small businesses who will be some of the most put under the gun.

I think they will make the assumption these are temporary tariffs and will be forced to borrow money to keep the lights on. Ultimately this will benefit the larger corporations once the environment changes

In a sense, this is a war. It’s a trade war.

Other countries have been trading unfairly. Hitting us with big tarriffs, manipulating their currency to make their goods cheaper, cheating on labor laws stipulated by the WTO, etc. We’re trying to hold them accountable. We’re trying to turn consumer attention to buying American.

Correcting this situation comes at a cost.
Someone has to pay.
It will be more expensive.

Imo, buying American is patriotic .i been trying to do that for years. It’s hard but there’s some gratification in knowing that it was made by Americans.

I hope we can collectively send the message that we’re willing to pay more to hold these countries accountable

In many situations there is no American alternative. You need to realize this.

I was supposed to be buying luxury vinyl plank flooring (LVP) in a few months. American companies sell this but they are manufactured in either Vietnam or China. No alternative.

I know it gets deep and complex. But simply put, I feel like I pay enough taxes already. That’s just me though.

If income tax gets abolished, then you should be very happy!

Assuming you think the tariffs will stay in place to pay for the lost revenue.

Even though Trump has already said he is ready to deal.

So which is it

Trump has mentioned before that he is a fan of having tariffs and removing income tax and abolishing the IRS. This is how the federal government was originally funded in this country. It is what we should get back to at some point.

The future probably depends on whether other countries choose to give USA truly free and fair trade agreements and remove all their tariffs, taxes, currency manipulations, regulations, etc.
