The tariffs imposed on US from Trump spreadsheet are literally just the trade ratio

Cambodia: 97% (Actual Tariffs are ~10%)

US exports to Cambodia: $321.6 M

Cambodia exports to US: 12.7 B

Ratio: 321.6M / 12.7 B = ~3%

LINK

Vietnam: 90%

US exports to Vietnam: $13.1 B

Vietnam exports to US: $136.6 B

Ratio: 13.1B / 136.6B = ~10%

LINK

Sri Lanka: 88%

US exports to Sri Lanka: $368.2 M

Sri Lanka exports to US: $3.0 B

Ratio: ~12%

LINK

Malaysia: 47%

US exports to Malaysia: $27.7 B

Malaysia exports to US: $52.5 B

Ratio: ~53%.

LINK

What the Administration appears to be calling a "97% tariff" by Cambodia is in reality the fact that we export 97% less stuff to Cambodia than they export to us.

whatever your stance is on tariffs, this is insulting to your intelligence

I'm surprised that none of the 1,000 economists on this board hadn't pointed that out already.

The Tariff thing has been the one thing that I feel like the administration is jumping the shark on. I’m not even saying they’re wrong, they could be right. But it just seems risky and like something that could easily backfire and ruin a lot of the good the administration is doing in the eyes of the public.

So the greater the trade imbalance the less the tariff is?

Yeah, that doesn’t make any sense.

Half the people here believed Trump was the CIC over the past 4 years and would be reinstated.

You expect them to understand this?

No it’s not. It’s a chart showing our new tariff compared to the trade ratio. Not sure what is confusing for you

I generally support what Trump is doing with tariffs, but just using the trade ratio is crazy. The chart says including currency manipulation and trade barriers. I guess we’ll need to hear the details on that and how it was calculated (if it even was).

Reciprocal tariffs are one thing. You can’t achieve equal trading levels.

You realize Trump didn’t put a 97% tariff on Cambodia, correct?

yes. he (or more accurately the board he was holding) claimed Cambodia has a 97% tariff on the US so we were gonna put a reciprocal tariff of 49%

in fact Cambodia has a 10% tariff. the 97% is the trade deficit.

There's more evidence of fraud now than ever before.

You're more likely to be a conspiracy theorist if you think he didn't win 2020.

Correct, he used the fact that we have a 97% trade deficit to base his tariff on.... which is retarded

The belief that the tariffs actually are reciprocal is rampant in the other tariff threads.

I assume that CEOs all over America are lighting up every communication line into the White House now, and in a short time, Trump will announce that Liberation Day brought down other countries' Biden tariffs.

Completely agree.

He was never going to be reinstated nor was he the CIC. Those believing this are a special kind of stupid.

No, Cambodia doesn’t have a 10% tariff. Try again. It imposes a range of tariffs based on the type of goods. Trump’s chart is also considering the currency manipulation which is an important part of the whole picture.
