What the hell is the rule? I thought you couldn’t block the plate without the ball?
Posted on 3/29/25 at 11:47 pm to IMATIGERFAN
Should have not sent him to start with. Ball hit too hard and the fielder was not far past SS

The catcher can block the plate when they have the ball like their catcher had

I understand and like the rule for safety reasons. They are going to start forcing runners to go back to plowing catchers if they don't inforce obstruction. Also Hunt is an idiot. Just because Reaves wasn't there yet the catcher cannot camp in the baseline. He was there before the ball was thrown.

It’s probably not a reviewable play.

You cannot block a base/plate when you do not have possession of the ball. It was clear obstruction.

What about when he didn’t have the ball and was standing in front of the plate?

it’s only obstruction if there is runner there for you to obstruct.
he had the ball well before Reaves got there.

I think the interpretation needs to be cleaned up. By rule of it, yes he had the ball so he can block the plate, BUT he was blocking the plate before the ball was there. Reeves couldn’t slide headfirst or even directly to the plate because of the catcher illegally blocking the plate.
I think that should’ve been overruled, the catcher blocking the plate without the ball significantly impacted the runners path to the plate and ability to slide. Just because the catcher got the ball right before the runner was sliding, doesn’t mean he was in a legal position before he got the ball. Because of the impact to the runners ability to slide directly to the plate, it was an illegal position.

he was blocking the plate before he got it too and it definitely effected the slide

Well, catcher can also block it when it is in the lane of the throw & they are attempting to receive the throw

Unless the rule is different than the pro rule, he can, as long as he is attempting to receive the throw

Their catcher blocked the plate completely before he had the ball. But you already know this

Even the major leaguers are confused about what really constitutes blocking the plate these days. Just do a Google search. Some of the videos are baffling.
College rules are slightly different apparently, but the umpires seem just as confused. When the catcher is camped out IN FRONT OF THE PLATE as the ball is arriving, the runner has no time to avoid him other than to deviate from his direct path to the plate. That, to me, is obstruction.
In the major leagues, the umpires seem to be following the rule that the runner must be allowed a way to touch the plate. The play tonight, therefore, was blatant obstruction.
If I was the runner, the catcher wasn't trying to make a tag, he was inviting me to plow into him. Someone is going to have to do this -- Buster Posey someone -- or catchers are going to continue to think they can park in the baseline and field the throw with impunity.
