Never been to Charleston my wife and I have been discussing it for years.

How unbearable is it July 4th weekend both weather and crowd wise?

I assume New Orleansy weather, hot and humid as frick. I’ve heard the 4th crowds can be tough there.

Thoughts?

New Orleans humidity, but likely hotter. We were there once in early June when the temps were over 100 and humidity was dense. It was unbearable. You would walk around at mid-day for an hour, and you could wring out your shirt. I've never been to SE Asia, but I imagine it was close to what you would get there.

I wouldn’t go

Just as hot as NO, very crowded

Charleston is best in fall and spring or very early summer like May

We went the first week of June last year. It was great, not too hot and school was still in session, so it wasn’t crowded with school aged kids. As much as we enjoyed it, it would not interest me at all to go in July or August.

I’d call it a walking vacation. One day I had 35,000 steps. Doing that in July just isn’t possible.

Been there in July. Very hot, but I'd do it again—fantastic city to visit.

It’s not as bad as Louisiana. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s warm but you won’t sweat like a pig walking around.

Spent at least 6 months there over the years and almost all in July August and September.

You will love it! Great couples vacation spot. Will be hot but you will still have a good time. Just pack light clothes.

Charleston is a beautiful city, but July is going to be utterly miserable, you will be ringing out your shirt by 10 AM

It'll be hot and likely humid, but I doubt it'd be worse than New Orleans. And if it is there are plenty of beaches to visit and boat rides to take.

It's always crowded spring, summer, and fall.

Average high around 85 that time of year. Piece of cake

You'll have a blast. A bunch of recommendation threads on here for you to peruse in the meantime. I'm happy to answer any more specific questions.

I feel like I have the restaurant research down well enough with a nice list but always happy to see suggestions.

One general suggestion...many people stick to the historic district for their dinners, but there are some phenomenal places a bit off the beaten path.

Among them, on the peninsula:
- Vern's
- Costa
- Chez Nous
- Chubby Fish (no reservations here)
- Leon's (less fancy)

For Vern's and Chubby Fish, Elliottborough Mini Bar is a great place to get a beer or wine while you wait for your table.

The islands:
- Obstinate Daughter
- Acme Lowcountry Kitchen (haven't been here yet, heard it's awesome)
- Coda Del Pesce (haven't been here yet, heard it's awesome)
- Chico Feo (less fancy)
- Jack of Cups (haven't been here yet, heard it's awesome)

Obviously a boatload more, can recommend some if you're looking for a certain type/style/vibe.

For Chubby Fish, is it really worth getting there at 4, waiting in line for an hour, and getting your name on the list?

You don't need to get there at 4 to wait in line that long, especially if you're going during the week. You can get there at a quarter to 5 and when it opens the line moves quickly.

They will likely seat the entire place before you get to the front but when you do get up there you'll get either 6:30 (if that's not fully booked when you reach the front) or 8. If both times are open you can pick whichever you want, and then you grab drinks wherever until your reservation. If you're willing to invest that bit of time in line it's definitely worth it.

ETA:

quote:

Since opening in 2018, Chubby Fish has been named Best New Restaurant by Bon Appétit and ranked as the No. 7 Restaurant in the U.S. by Food & Wine Magazine. Most recently, London was named a James Beard finalist, solidifying his reputation as a culinary powerhouse.

Despite his tendency to avoid the spotlight, London is making waves again with a new venture — a cocktail bar called Seahorse located next door to his flagship restaurant.

Seahorse, located at 254 Coming St., resides in a historic 1892 building, just two years younger than the cozy 1,000 square-foot space occupied by Chubby Fish. London’s vision for Seahorse is a “world class” cocktail bar, with all that entails, like meticulously crafted drinks, exceptional service and an atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

I should've mentioned, the owners just opened Seahorse right next door, for pre-dinner cocktails and bites, but apparently that place is also amazing and now gets its own line.

Unfortunately it would be on a Friday or Saturday on a Holiday weekend as they are closed Sunday and Monday and we leave Tuesday

It's as hot as anywhere - I'd still go. I live in Columbia, so its only a 2 hour drive - but the wife and I go almost monthly for a night away when the grandparents are up for a night with the kids.

It's a great weekend getaway.
