Do we have it completely backwards when we say “kids are so soft today?”

Yeh, I often think about todays youth and then having “anxiety” and “stress” at such young ages and everyone seeing counselor’s etc etc
And the easiest answer is “they are soft”. But watching my 8 year old oldest child for fricks sake their lives are a damn pressure cooker compared to growing up 30 years ago
When I was in second grade there was no homework or real tests, and even the dumbest kids would get a “B” at worst if we ever had real grades
Now I look at his course work and it’s legit work and they get number grades and multiple kids make Fs in second grade
Then onto sports the biggest deal was the pizza party after, but now kids are all aware of winning at all cost to the social media and how involved parents are with posting and comparing
I don’t think kids are softer, their genetic makeup is the same as ever before, but frick man they are raised in an absolute pressure cooker compared to the older days
I don’t know if it’s just a rebound from the boomer generation raising kids absentee, but Millenials as a whole need to back off a bit and not make life for kids so damn stressful. Let them be kids and have their only “worries” be getting back in time for supper

Sometimes I think about how often I tell my kids to “hurry up”.

They are soft bc of how they are raised, by their parents and the school system.
But your examples seem silly. A small portion of kids are in travel ball or have crazy competitive parents.
Also there are tons of public schools pushing stupid arse kids to the next year. Comparing a catholic school education to public school where you can literally graduate without learning how to read seems silly.

The wife and I early on promised to raise strong independent children. It's a challenge, while my kids are strong they are constantly surrounded by kids who are not.
I agree, lots more pressure than when I grew up in 80s/90s...hell my 5th grader (Texas public schools) is doing the same Algebra and Geometry as I did in 10th grade Louisiana public schools.

The course work they do is insane compared to us

if you grew up in a small, mayberry style town in the 80s or 90s and now live in upper middle class suburbia, it's a very different lifestyle.

I think it's a combo. If your 8 yr old kid is "stressed" then yes he probably is soft. My girls are in the 2nd grade and they don't have nearly as much homework as they did in the 1ST grade which is crazy. Depends on the teacher at their school. Some are tougher on them.
I don't think so. Parents are lazier than ever though and you are stressing thinking that an 8 yr old is stressing. I can give you some real problems if you need some. Most anxiety and stress comes from the diet that particular person is eating. All of that stems from your gut

The parenting is what's become softer.

Parents are involved and do so much shite now compared to when I was growing up.

THat is true. But still. Less than 5-10% of kids (and that's being generous) deal with that type of shite.

We are serious about trying hard/working hard in whatever you choose to do and committing to it. We are serious about having good manners and being a kind person to others. We are serious about not lying/honesty. We are serious about loving yourself and being proud of your accomplishments, and your effort, without being braggadocios.
You do those things, we are chill about everything else. I don't care if you track mud in the house or get a B on a test if you studied for it. We don't care if you don't want to eat every vegetable on your plate. We don't care if you stay up a bit too late. We don't care if you are emotional about something as it is natural.

As someone who was raised by Boomers, they had no idea what we were doing 90% of the time and moreover did not care as long as we did not bother them

Kids these days who are properly raised are some bad arse little machines. They are so damned smart.

I think it’s a very very lazy trope to say parents now are lazier or softer. They seem way more involved overall and expectations are raised
It’s like everyone is hyper aware of “the future” and they are preparing 8 year olds for their career

While as a millenial I kind of agree, I think it's more that parents need to be parents instead of friends, and if you're not ready to be a parent, don't have children.
Kids these days aren't told "no" enough and held to it. The parents just cave and do and buy whatever they want.
Posted on 3/27/25 at 12:10 pm to lsupride87
Millennials don’t have time for that because they’re paying for expensive housing food car, etc. the boomers have forced on us

It's gonna blow your mind that not all public school are created equal.

Damn bro. I think you're on to something here.
I agree, It's the parents creating more stress for our kids then necessary
