'Like a horror movie:' Michigan grandparents detained in Mexico over timeshare dispute
I don't know who is right or wrong in this situation, but this stood out to me:
What in the absolute frick? That's almost a million dollars for a timeshare.

In 2021, the Akeos bought a timeshare membership package from Palace Elite Resorts for $6,923 per month for 11 years, the family’s lawyer said. The monthly fee was charged to an American Express card.

the company alleges they defrauded it through $117,000 of chargebacks on their American Express card, in which American Express takes back funds from a vendor.
The couple, through their lawyer and family, deny the fraud allegations.

In recent days, the Akeos’ lawyers said, Palace offered a “settlement” if the couple paid $250,000, signed a non-disclosure agreement, helped take down a Facebook group related to Palace Resorts that Christy Akeo had participated in and publicly apologized. The family declined and called the settlement offer an extortion attempt, they said.

Agreed. The only exception might be Disney Vacation Club.

From personal experience, this is the correct answer. Trying to unravel that shite is costly and time consuming and you still more or less lose.

Agreed. You can easily sell your DVC points if you no longer want them. It’s a fantastic deal if you go to Disney multiple times a year

These people deserve it for being idiots.
Who would invest a million dollars in anything in Mexico, the entire country is crooked.

They were incredibly stupid for going back to Mexico at all knowing that they were after them.

Imagine being stupid enough to not only buy a timeshare, but to buy one that costs just shy of $7k per month and charging it on a credit card.

They say they didn't know, and I doubt any American would expect to be arrested over credit card charges.
They were certainly dumb to get involved with the timeshares, but this seems like a civil matter. But under Mexican law, perhaps not.

They should call Chuck McDowell

In other words a normal Mexican business deal. Everything about this couple screams stupid. If you are going to mess around in Mexico better know how to play the game.

Correct, which reminds me of a trip to Puerto Vallarta back in the late 90's. My ex-gf and I stayed at this 5 star hotel which had advertised "free car rental for one weekend". Well nothing is free, the only condition was to attend a 2 hour Timeshare sale presentation, including "free lunch". Turns out at the end of the presentation they asked who would be interested in committing to purchasing a timeshare. We declined (we only wanted the free car rental). Then they tried to convince us again in why it is a good idea to "invest" in one. We declined again and eventually got the free car rental.
You would think the story ends there. Next day, hotel manager/assistant mgr knocks on our hotel room door offering another free lunch if we heard him speak. He gave us lunch vouchers and after the lunch he sat down with us. There he was making another pitch in getting a timeshare. After 20 minutes or so, we gave our final answer "NOT INTERESTED". You should have seen the face on this man, he got all pissed off talking or cursing in Spanish and nodding his head, rudely asking us to leave that the meeting was over. LOL! free car rental and free lunches came with a price tag apparently. Never again I'm attending to one of those, ever!

I want to see what’s worth 7 grand a month, that you only get to use part of the time.

No sympathy. It's Mexico. You knew it was Mexico. You went there and bought something and got fricked over in the land of "everybody gets fricked over" here.
They were stupid enough to get into this. Let them fight their own way out.
