My wife’s 2013 Pathfinder has 136k on it and last summer we spent 4k to replace an engine mount and all the brakes and some other stuff.

She’s driving my car right now while I get this fixed.

Long story short last week I was driving and the RPMs shot right up to 6K. I called my neighbor because he owns a mechanical shop and AAA towed it there.

He just called me to tell me he got his transmission guy to come take a look and he thinks he can replace a lot of the parts and make it brand new for $2200. He is waving all of the labor costs. It still needs new valve covers and axles for the tranny so grand total out the door is 4k with tax.

I really don’t know what to do. The car might be worth $2500 and this will be 8K worth of repairs in the last eight months.

On the other hand if we buy a new SUV for my wife, she wants to keep a third row and the rates are currently around 7%. In addition, she’s always wanted a palisade and they are completely redesigning it for next year and it looks like a different car. We are the type to drive a car until it falls apart, so I would rather wait and get the new body style since we like it so much

I really haven’t been in this situation so I’m just curious with the money Guys here what you were do in the situation

My first piece of advice is to tell your wife to stop driving like a maniac. 136k miles is not a lot on a modern car you shouldn’t be having these types of problems

I agree. A Pathfinder should last a lot longer than 136k before it falls apart. For reference, I have a 2013 Tundra with 226,000 miles and have never done anything but routine maint.

My advice would be to cut your losses at this point with the Nissan and get rid of it. Buy her a pre 2021 Honda or Toyota equivalent if you like to keep vehicles until the wheels fall off. I’d also pay cash and be done with it if you can.

How familiar are you with Nissan and their CVT transmissions? This is common.

OP, I wouldn’t waste a dime on a 2013 Pathfinder. Sell it for what you can. Not sure about Palisade reliability, but I don’t know that Hyundai has a “drive it into the ground” reputation. I’d also discourage buying the first year of a total redesign. If you want three rows and want it to last forever, the answer is 9 times out of 10 Toyota Highlander.

We just bought a replacement Toyota Sienna after the wife had a fender bender on her 2011. Paid cash in 2014 for the 2011 and paid cash in 2025 for the 2020 model (last model with V6 non-hybrid with 60K miles).

If you need a replacement vehicle, get one, but get what you can afford vs. what your wife always wanted. If you do that enough, the two will eventually merge.

Also, you might save some maintenance costs if you can learn to wrench a little and pay attention to things like worn brake pads to avoid replacing them, as well as rotors.

Curious if the third row is a necessity or she just 'wants' it?

Funny I grew up with 4 other siblings and we only had one row in dad’s single cab Silverado and turned out fine.

Don't spend a time on the pathfinder. Try and trade it on on something better

Nissan CVTs are the worst, its a ticking time bomb, I would walk away from it. It's only a matter of time before the CVT ultimately fails on you (sounds like it is basically).

Whats your current financial situation like overall? Can you afford a new car?

Why not look at certified pre-owned? You dont just have to settle for market rates, there's always manufacturer subsidized rates even on some used vehicles. We got my wife a 2022 MDX CPO for 1.49%/36mo last summer.

Is that what you would tell the judge after your 4 kids fly through the windshield in a wreck?

Everything is on the table and what we have to figure out. It’s just bad timing and yes used is preferred but within the last 3 years because we keep cars forever and I’m a tech guy and want the latest or near latest tech and safety features.

Just can’t believe the cost of cars now . Toyotas are basically luxury vehicles now. Online I saw used Highlanders with 40-50k on them for 40-45k. That’s nuts. The Lexus is basically the same price range

Vehicles inflated a ton over the last 5 years, its been bad. Used prices have corrected some but its still used prices on things that went way up in MSRP over the last few years if you're looking for something made in the last few years.

We got the '22 MDX tech pkg for $40k with 29k miles on it. Original sticker was for $54k on it. A 2019 MDX same trim level stickered for about $50.5k. So from just 2019 to 2022 it rose a decent bit. A 2025 MDX tech (again, same trim) is just under $58k with now. So over 6 model years it went from $50.5k to $58k for the same vehicle basically.

Yeah I’m seeing Civics with 25k miles going for 30k

I got my fully loaded Rogue out the door for 30k in 2021. I have 70k on it and it’s been great.

Jeep is wheeling and dealing on Grand Cherokees right now. Make sure you get the 3.6l V6 with the 8 speed and no higher than limited trim, should be a reliable vehicle. Not Toyota 4Runner levels of reliable, but above average.

This has caught my attention as we have a 2013 vehicle that is getting a little long in the tooth. But I have a RAM and owning two Stelantis vehicles makes me very nervous.

I’ve had 3 Ram 1500’s, a Challenger SRT8, an Alfa Romeo Giulia, and now a 2023 Grand Cherokee. I also had a Hyundai Santa Cruz between the Giulia and GC, but was too small for two car seats.

Only one that has given me a problem that I didn’t cause myself was the Giulia. That said, I’ve had my GC for 2 years and it only has 9200 miles…but I know the 3.6 + 8 speed is a good drivetrain since it was carried over from the WK2 GC. Those were good and reliable.

It isn't about the worth of the car. It is about can you get as nice of a car for the same or less amount of money.

It is almost always the financially prudent decision to just fix and keep a car.

Get a used Toyota Highlander XLE. It has enough conveniences. You can find 2022s for around 35k with 35k miles. That thing will last 250k miles. My wife's fleet car is a highlander, and it is much nicer than the Pilot I have.

I always see Jeep and Chrysler ranked near the bottom of reliability

Is that not a problem anymore?
