I have a nutria in a 5ish acre pond. Should I get rid of it? As long as it doesn’t mess with the fish, I don’t really mind it.

I know they are herbivores, but have read they can impact the ecosystem and thus harm the fish..

I’d try to get rid of it.
Yes, they won’t eat your fish but they’ll eat the surrounding vegetation which can lead to erosion and poorer quality water from increased runoff.
Additionally, do nutrias dig?
If they do and you have a levee or damn, then you definitely want to remove it.

We had them in our subdivision ponds, and the one that wasn’t protected all the way around with a bulkhead had a lot of damage to the bank and shoreline.

I would recommend a .17HMR

They will destroy the bank and vegetation. Our neighborhood pond is living proof. I killed 5 last month after getting approval from the HOA. Hate those things. They eat good though.

I can't think of any benefits of having a nutria.

If your pond has raised retention around the side that acts as any type of dam they will burrow into it and it will end up leaking. They love that stuff. Member at a fishing club with 7 10 to 30 acre lakes and the damage they can do is impressive.

This! Get rid of it asap. The tunnels they make in your levee/banks will lead to leaks.

You have to be a licensed trapper to get the bounty.

The Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act Program web site

quote:

This program is managed by U.S Department of Agriculture - Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. To incentive the harvesting of nutria, the Coastwide Nutria Control Program will pay licensed trappers a bounty of $6/nutria tail.
