Why can't the US phone companies get a handle on this? A few times a year, I get a call or text from someone claiming that I called or texted them. When you explain that it was spoofed (someone scammer in Asia or Africa advertised your number as the number they were calling from), sometimes they understand and sometimes they don't believe you... mainly because the latter are of the ignorant type.

This could be easily controlled if they put in the same safeguard that ISPs use for IP addresses and domain names.

Long story short, it won't be fixed because we support backwards compatibility.

US based carriers aren't actually the ones that are allowing the spoofing. Some shitty countries allow you to buy trunk access and do the spoofing.. all goes back to the SS7 protocol designed in the 80s and hasn't really been updated since. I've actually built SS7 spoofing infrastructure before for work

You just need to call the Microsoft support number on the email and explain it to them. I did, crazy story- guy refunded me some
Norton security subscription I didn’t know I had, but refunded me too much. Had to pay them back with MS-approved Google Play cards. The tech and I still keep in touch.

Isn’t technology amazing?

don't answer phone calls if you don't recognize the number.

I shite you not, this scam is known as Pig Butchering, and is very successful.

I know this board doesn't like Jon Oliver, but he had a great segment on it last year.

the point of the attacks is it shows up on your phone as if it’s from the spoofed phone number. there’s no difference to the victim’s caller id

my buddy got a call from “ascension parish sheriff’s office” (that’s how it shows up on his iPhone), and and English speaking dude told him he had a $500 fine for not showing up in court.. it was a scam

that’s also how all the swatting stuff is happening

They could simply not pass along a number advertisement that doesn't originate from the carrier that owns the number. That would be high level yet still reduce the vast majority of spoofed calls.

Say you're calling from India telecom but advertising a DID that belongs to Verizon. The call should be rejected.

No shite, Chicken. That, however, is not the scenario that I am talking about.

In my scenario, someone has called me claiming that I called them because the original scammer spoofed the call to look like it came from my number.

if you would just pay that toll for that toll road you've never traveled, this would stop.

Unless you have a number that is numerically or visually close to an authoritative agency (Sheriff's office is -6553, and your phone number is -6558, etc.) it was probably random. All the spoofed calls I don't see (block calls and messages from non-contacts) are just random from my local six digit block.

I had a call this morning from a local number that I'm pretty sure was a very lifelike AI asking me if I wanted to sell my house.

Go into your phone settings send all calls not on your contacts to voicemail.
If call is legit they will leave a voicemail.

I was cutting grass a few years ago and my phone rings over my Bose headphones. I look and it's a call from MYSELF. I shut the mower down and answer it bc I wanna hear this one. What's the odds of them spoofing numbers and choosing my number to call me?

Problem is no one now days has ever heard of a wrong number. If I didn’t leave a message, you don’t need to call me back asking “who’s dis”.

I have received a cell phone call from my own cell phone number.

I had a great deal of fun with that a-hole.

I wish you could just not accept the calls not in your contacts. Would be perfect for mentally challenged and older folks.

I went to settings in my phone and any number that calls me that is not listed in contacts goes straight to voicemail.

You can turn off random numbers
