He was an a-hole, but I do miss him.

The Keith Jackson of college basketball. Arrogant as hell but when you heard his voice. You knew who it was.

Can you imagine how much time he'd spend complaining about the portal and NIL?

Couldn't stand the guy, he was the Verne Lundquist of basketball. Still remember him running on and on about Oklahoma beating Kansas in the late 80's during the game. Oklahoma takes aerobics at second wind (or some shite like that) and when it kicks in it's over for Kansas. Well, yeah that didn't happen and Kansas won. Had no dog in the hunt but he was so sure of himself I couldn't help but watch to see him be so wrong. Before the game I really didn't care who won, but his incessant opining on the merits of Oklahoma made me stick around.

Billy Packer helped make college basketball great. Sort of like Ron Franklin
Gottfried and crew for ESPN college football

I remember the time LSU won the game to get to the Final Four and Dale Brown walked up to him and kissed him right on the lips on national television.

I miss the Pack Rat, and especially enjoyed it when he wasn’t calling games involving ACC teams.

I don’t miss his strong ACC bias, however.

He was the bet color guy there ever was back there. Go back and watch that LSU vs. Indiana Elite 8 game in 1987 he was fantastic.

Kinda, but it too often seemed like he hated his job. Bill Raftery is the GOAT.

Yes. I liked how opinionated he was. Rafferty is fine. But Hill is rather vanilla on CBS's A team.

Here's how I know to disregard any opinion you have on anything. Hating Verne? Holy shite.

Pour one out for the time Billy Packer trashed Ben Voogd

quote:

LSU seems to turn the ball over on about 10 consecutive possessions. Billy Packer says of LSU back-up point-guard Ben Voogd, "He's really not capable of playing at this level right now." Ouch. I'm certain of this -- Ben Voogd's mother will hate Billy Packer with absolute passion for the rest of her life. UCLA is up 33-17 with five minutes remaining in the first half.
