Miller Gardner, the youngest son of Brett Gardner, died on Friday at the age of 14, the family announced through the Yankees on Sunday.

In a statement from the former Yankees outfielder and his wife Jessica, the Gardners said Miller fell ill “along with several other family members while on vacation.”

Several years ago a family was vacationing in the Caribbean when they became severely ill. The reason: a pest control company had sprayed their condo with a banned pesticide. I think they all survived, but suffered debilitating nerve damage.

Tainted alcohol, food poisoning, banned chemicals….. there’s a long list of dangers families can face when vacationing, especially in third world countries.

You can hate the Yankees, but you shouldn’t downvote this thread. So sad. It is my worst fear in life…..

Update --- Possible carbon monoxide poisoning

quote:

Costa Rican officials said a team specializing in "hazardous atmosphere" tested the hotel room and detected high levels of carbon monoxide, leading investigators to believe that carbon monoxide poisoning may have played a role in the teen's death.

Officials also noted that there was a "specialized machine room" near the 14-year-old's hotel room, which could have caused some sort of contamination to the nearby room.

Before Monday's update, Costa Rican authorities initially told multiple media outlets last week Miller Gardner may have died of possible "food intoxication" -- before ruling that out.

carbon monoxide poisoning
This happened to 3 females from Massachusetts in a Belize hotel back in February.
quote:

Three American women who were discovered dead in a Belize resort hotel room last month died from carbon monoxide poisoning, their families said.

A joint statement this week from their families cites the U.S. Embassy in Belize and says the women died from "acute carbon monoxide poisoning, likely caused by a faulty instant water heater."

They initially ruled out Carbon Monoxide only to end up doing additional testing later. I don’t think they wanted to close down hotel. The Massachusetts chief medical examiner ended up agreeing to determine cause of death.
