My parents paid over $2,000 for our first computer back in the mid-80's.

6 applications on one 360K disk. These days you can't get a printer driver that is less than half a gigabyte.

Our first was a Commodore that used a cassette tape for memory IIRC. I was only 10 at that time, way before 89

I remember paying $400 for a 20 megabyte hard drive way back when. It greatly expanded my storage and I didn't know what I'd do with all of that space on the hard drive.
My FIL had an original IBM PC XT. Those babies came out at $7545.

I paid $3,200 for a 486 Micron with 140 MB hard drive around 1991 (maybe '92...I forget).

Tandy 1000TX, baby! No hard drive, I installed that RLL? drive on a card later. 640k of freedom, yea! I think we got it in 1990. Look, ma, that paid off a hell of a lot more than anything I did in college!

Back in '97 I paid $650 for a Panasonic 19" computer monitor at Best Buy. Still remember it, what a moron! Over a decade later I remember tossing that same monitor (in perfect working condition) in the dumpster and thinking about those $650.

$2,500 in 1985 is equivalent to about $7,380.83 today, an increase of $4,880.83 over 40 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 2.74% per year between 1985 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 195.23%.
We didn't come from a super wealthy family either.
There's no way I'd pay $7k for a kid's computer in 2025.

$11,000?!?
Son, I just bought a brand new laptop for $160. It has very few bells and whistles, but I'm not doing quantum computing on it. It's perfect for what I need.

Closest I got was Gateway Laptop for $2k back in fall 2002. Ran that thing all the way through grad school. If finally croaked in 2012.
Crazy how much things have advanced just since then.

My dad bought a hand held calculator when they first came out. All it did was add, subtract, multiply and divide. He paid $100.00 dollars for it. Seems like you can get them in gum machines nowadays for a quarter.
He said that was the dumbest thing he ever bought. But it served the purpose I reckon.
