Acadiana U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins wrote in a letter Thursday that he would not run in the 2026 U.S. Senate — even though he pointed to a poll that found he would have won.

“It is my considered determination that, current engagement in the House being incredibly significant, it may be ultimately more beneficial to the Republic that I remain in service to the MAGA America First agenda as a senior Republican in the House of Representatives,” wrote Higgins, R-Lafayette. “So, fellow citizen, I shall continue to serve you in the People’s House.”

Higgins did not endorse incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Baton Rouge Republican who has angered many right-wing Republicans after voting to convict President Donald Trump of impeachment charges for provoking the January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

State Treasurer John Fleming, R-Minden, is the only announced challenger to Cassidy. A former congressman, Fleming also worked in the White House during Trump’s first term.

Rumor that Scalise is going to run for the Senate with Trump's backing to take out Cassidy.

With whom?

This should help pave the way for Fleming.

Well someone needs to run against him.

I know someone who will if no one does.

We need to get behind one Republican challenger. We don’t need several splitting the vote that will allow Cassidy to get Democrats to switch over and vote for him and make him the Republican nominee.

I'd take this as well. I think I would actually prefer Scalise as a Senator to him as a House member, but that district will put a clone of him in his spot, I'm guessing.

If a real threat runs, Cassidy will retire to avoid a humiliating defeat.

"Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,"

With the field. Clay Higgins is a legitimate idiot and he's got his support infrastructure here. If he had to go abroad, especially off script, he would expose himself.

I think Fleming would too. I'd very enthusiastically vote for either one of them.

Just as a reminder of this board's bipolar syndrome, though, it wasn't all that long ago when 70% of this board hated Scalise. I don't remember why, it was some bullshite about him voting a certain way that might've been against MAGA. Even with that, Scalise is a damn good Louisianan and American and he would make a fantastic senator.

Honestly, I'm more worried about a democrat taking the governorship next go round. I can see a realistic scenario where many republicans don't vote in that election, allowing a democrat to take the seat. I think Jeff Landry is an absolute moron and we need to put a lot of our attention on replacing him with another conservative.

Bingo. He was probably told to stand down for Fleming.

Mitch and Mitt knew what arse kicking was coming.

100%

He'd be a terrible choice.

I've seen people criticize some shite he's done, but I don't think there was any time where "70% of this board hated Scalise." That's just hyperbolic silliness.

Don't believe that will happen. If no solid candidate runs against him, I suspect the seat would flip blue. There are too many people that will refuse to vote for him. I don't think he will make it on a "hold your nose and vote R" campaign that he will have to run.
