The greatest Oscar snub of all-time

And it's not what you think.
In 1987, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences awarded the Oscar for Best Original Score to Herb Hancock's compositions for the movie, Round Midnight. The score featured jazz music that had been recycled from older compositions, which would have made it ineligible with today's rules.
Round Midnight beat out Ennio Morricone's magical score for the movie, The Mission - a score that legend John Williams called the greatest film score of all-time. When you listen to the soundtracks there is absolutely no comparison. One is very bland while the other is clearly an all-time classic.

also a fantastic movie in its own right. Morricone did win the Oscar for hateful eight so he got a make up call

Also, I never saw any of the other nominees for that year, but Crash was pretty shitty. I hated it.

I can’t help but wonder what old Harvey pulled to have Shakespeare in Love beat out Saving Private Ryan. I’m sure he had the goods on lots of people.
ETA: Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music from a film

1993. Unforgiven is good and all, but

Forest Gump winning over Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption was dumb

He actually utilized the same argument a lot of hipsters on this board love to criticize Saving Private Ryan with: after the first 20 minutes it becomes a generic war movie.

Never saw brokeback mountain, but I liked Munich, capote, and good night & good luck a lot more than crash.
ETA: the only memorable part of crash was Ludacris getting offended by someone locking their car because he and his friend were nearby, then proceeding to rob that car

I feel like I'm the only one that actually liked that movie. Shouldn't have won the Oscar though.
But the "shooting" scene with the Middle Eastern shop-keeper and Michael Pena always gets me.

Michael Keaton not even being nominated for Clean And Sober .
The nominees were:
Dustin Hoffman – Rain Man (convincing, but a pretty one-note performance)
Gene Hackman – Mississippi Burning (nothing special)
Tom Hanks – Big (good, but a goofball performance)
Edward James Olmos – Stand and Deliver (good)
Max von Sydow – Pelle the Conqueror (career achievement nod)
I saw a ton of movies in those days, and Keaton's performance was as good or better than Hoffman's, who won.

By the way, since we're on Airborne (randomly
), I was going to make a thread about this the other day but haven't done it yet. So I might as well do it in here instead. But I watched Airborne a couple weeks ago, and I've always thought that the dude who played the a-hole in Airborne (Jack) was the same dude that played the a-hole in Remember the Titans (Ray).
But I found out recently that it's not the same dude, and it sort of blew my mind because I have thought that for probably 20 years.
Not the same guy:
AND
Jack is an actor named Chris Conrad.
Ray is an actor named Burgess Jenkins.
I was legit astonished when I found this out a couple weeks ago.

The last 20 minutes are also great it’s the middle that kind of drags and the old Pvt Ryan is very cheesy.
Shakespeare in Love is actually a very good movie, I wonder how it would be looked at if it didn’t win Best Picture, that may be the worst thing to ever happen to it.

Take it with a huge grain of salt. I mean Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar.

Robert Shaw not getting the supporting actor nom for Jaws is proof the Academy was full of shite 50 years ago too

Alfred Hitchcock never won a best director award and only one of his movies (Rebecca) won best picture.
He wasn't even nominated for North By Northwest, Vertigo, Dial M for Murder, Shadow of a Doubt, and The Lady Vanishes (among others).
