UK couple imprisoned in Afghanistan...

Their website
Guardian article
I was alerted to this story because a friend on facebook shared this for the story to get out. These UK grandparents have lived in Afghanistan, stayed after the US left, are citizens (which I'm assuming led to them getting arrested since they are considered citizens of that country - not that the Afghani's care about whether you are their citizen or not). I'm assuming these people are considered spies/missionaries/etc. If they work for an org, it's crazy they have been allowed to work there.
I'm also not sure what they expected when the country actively seeks to restrict women's rights and they are directly trying to empower people...

They have lived there now for over 18 years, and became Afghan citizens as this is the country they call ‘home’. When the Taliban took over in 2021 they refused to leave, saying they ‘couldn’t leave the country and the people they love, in their darkest hour.
Soon after this happened, the Taliban invited them to speak to a large group of their leaders about the work they do there. They were working with 5 schools, training the teachers to help children ‘learn through active participation’ (& play) rather than the current system of ‘by rote’. The Taliban loved what they had to say (even gave Barbie the first woman’s ’Certificate of Appreciation'!)

With the new administration boasting about its desire to punish journalists, and Trump and his allies already pursuing lawsuits against newspapers whose stories they don’t like, it has never been more urgent, or more perilous, to pursue fair, accurate reporting. Can you support the Guardian today?
We value whatever you can spare, but a recurring contribution makes the most impact, enabling greater investment in our most crucial, fearless journalism. As our thanks to you, we can offer you some great benefits – including seeing far fewer fundraising messages like this. We’ve made it very quick to set up, so we hope you’ll consider it. Thank you.

I hate it for them. But they chose a path to live amongst a society that is incompatible with their and our western sensitivities and subject to that society’s whims. Unfortunately for them, it is not working out.

Bummer… I hope they’re all lawyered up with a high level Afghan lawyer.

Not understanding why they want to leave now as opposed to a year ago.

As always, there's a fine line between bravery and stupidity.
Not sure where they fall to be honest.

If they were a 7 foot tall lgbtq woman who regularly trashes the US, we would trade a whole regiment of Taliban terrorists for them.

He’s suing the Des Moines Register, he said CNN and MSNBC should be stopped and called them “illegal”, and he has barred organizations such as the AP from the Oval Office for certain events.

Put out an obviously fake poll the week of the election where the pollster couldn’t explain her own crosstabs when questioned about them.

Cry me a river. How many conservative news organizations did Biden let in the press pool? It’s a privilege to be let into the press pool not a right.

Buddy, I didn’t inject an ounce of opinion into that post. I just answered the guy’s question.
As for your reply, I expect a lot of the MAGA crowd will agree with you and the fella above you because you love the way boot tastes as long as orange man is wearing it. I’m more of a free speech/free press/freedom guy, but to each his own.

STFU. Your post was dripping with an anti-fascist tone.

This is no different than some of our rather less than intelligent Americans who think it would be "fun" to drive through cartel territory yet the families wonder their kid was murdered.
In life, we must adapt to an ever changing landscape.
