I storm chase for a non-profit organization. Would I be able to use my gas receipts and other chasing expenses as a tax write-off?

I'm not getting paid to do it and Im not 1099.

Its all out of the goodness of my heart haha.

I directly contribute to the non profit org's mission of informing the public and saving lives.

Unless it’s some provision I’m unaware of, you’d have to itemize deductions to use them and the threshold is 14k or so for individuals..

How much are we taking about here?

if we’re talking a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars fall in a donation in kind to a charitable organization.

If you are not getting paid to do it, it likely would be considered a hobby. You’ll get a lot better answers on the money board.

We don't get paid because all of our social media monetization goes to paying for our skycams. Without chasers there is no group.....and I'm one of the main chasers. My live streams and my footage directly generate funds for the organization. Its not just a hobby.

I would think I should be able to at least save my gas receipts that I get while I'm storm chasing.

Well, you need to consult a tax advisor so they can tell you what you need to be able to write that off! It sounds like just a matter of documentation.

If it is a qualified charitable organization, then you

Can deduct out-of-pocket expenses when you serve a qualified organization as a volunteer

As long as the gas is unreimbursed, directly connected to the services, only expenses because of the services you gave, and not for personal use

Please see IRS publication 526 page 5, out-of-pocket expenses in giving services and then car expenses

Cannot deduct value of your time or services, insurance, maintenance, etc

The standard deduction was increased dramatically a few years ago.

Since then, it is much harder to exceed the threshold for itemized deductions (I paid off my house, so I have no home mortgage deduction).

You prob don’t spend enough on gas alone to itemize your deductions.

So we would need to know if you usually just take the standard deduction or already itemize.

If there’s no money to pay you back, it’s a hobby disguised as a non profit or it’s a non profit not making enough money to stay afloat without volunteer work.

Your best bet, imo, as a non cpa would be to get more donations and then reimburse yourselves for the gas.

You also need to be careful with your auto insurance and other things, if you are in an accident ‘working’ for the non profit it could be viewed as a commercial activity by insurance.
