Weather forecasting is out of control!

I understand there was some really severe weather in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama but the fearmongering by the local meteorologists and the constant text from emergency management in the New Orleans area are ridiculous. Currently under flood advisory until 8pm and it has drizzled for 5 minutes.

Rob Wrong Perillo is insufferable when there any precipitation within 59 miles of Lafayette.

These “meteorologists” graduate from these lib universities and have to sensationalize everything.

These guys find a computer that is willing to say the world is ending and then threaten lawsuits to anyone that doesn’t cancel their plans. I’d be happy if they outlawed these computers and make the weathermen roll up their sleeves and work like the old days.

Parts of the city had pretty solid rain
Plus the pumps and all

While I tend to lean toward safety being a priority, I do agree with you a good bit. In recent years it does feel like almost every major weather event is overhyped and doesn’t deliver (not that we want it to deliver, but still).

I think NWS and responsible, established media folks (like Spann) are pros and do their best.
But like almost every other industry, you now have this influencer/infotainment segment that has mixed (or outright bad) motivations.

Want to tell the 26 people that have died (so far) that it was overhyped? Just because something didn't happen to you, doesn't mean nothing happened.

It poured at our house in BR for 10 minutes. It does that almost every other day in the spring and summer. I get it was bad in some places, but it seems like they'd be better at the location at this point.

In Birmingham it’s no different. The entire county shuts down today except for a few gas stations. In the end, all we get is some rain. One business closes and it becomes a domino effect. But a tornado hits an hour away and destroys a few trailers and everyone feels justified. This happens 2-3 times a year and it didn’t happen at this level before social media. Nobody’s really any safer. There has to be some middle ground or nuance.
Of course there’s a certain egocentric Birmingham Meteorologist that’s made a lot of money by getting people really wound up and to call him out is complete blasphemy around here.

The tornado outbreak from April 27, 2011 has scarred so many and caused meteorologists to “overreact” with forecasts. I’m glad they are cautious and aware but there have been some big, big whiffs. I’m always ecstatic and relieved they were wrong for obvious reasons, but I’m also curious on why they were so badly wrong.
It’s different reporting now. Living in the state there is no denying it IMO

They predict severe weather and it doesn’t materialize, people just laugh at them.
On the other hand,
If they don’t predict severe weather and it ends up happening, people’s lives are in danger.
What would you do?

One in the same. He’s the Fauci of Alabama.

It's accurate enough to predict there might be severe weather in some location within a huge swath of the country on a given day but not accurate enough to say exactly where. The constant stickying of fear mongering weather nerd threads on this site doesn't help either.

Ryan Hall emboldened a bunch of people to sky scream whenever there’s a drop of rain. It’s ridiculous.

I don’t know. There was an actual tornado. Could have happened anywhere in the area and also been much worse.

The weather channel and meteorologist on local news stations are riding the hyperbolic wave along with the social media meteorologists. It got windy here in St. George with a decent bit of rain. Was it ANYTHING worthy of a text alert, multiple warnings about being “abnormally dangerous” or whatever it was? Absolutely not.
Did a tornado touch down in Livingston? Yes. Does that mean everyone needs to be cowering in their homes across the BR Metro area? frick no.

They started talking about today’s “event” last Sunday night. They ramped it up all week as thd situation worsened. The NWS said it could be historic.
I realize they had very bad storms 100 miles away or more, but the hype they give these things is over the top.

Are they really any more in danger if they aren’t bombarded with fear porn from the meteorologists?
