Have you ever shipped a vehicle across the country?

Shipping a vehicle across the USA :

What would be a fair price to pay 2800 miles round trip?
Which company would you go with?

Moved away from my trusted mechanic 1 year ago. In my new town There’s only Firestone and a Couple other random places i don’t trust yet.

If I wanted to ship my truck ,145k miles, to get a new transmission 1,400 hundred miles , there and back . I can confirm he will take care of my transmission under warranty.

Does that sound like a bad deal? He gave my truck a tune up right before I left town last year and I felt like I was driving a new truck.

Assuming I could use a work vehicle for a couple weeks or get a rental.

You're more loyal to this mechanic than some dudes are their wives. Just find another mechanic.

You got a tune up a year ago and now you need a transmission?

Yeah this mechanic of yours sounds reliable

Never done it myself but I know the owner of this business that ships cars all over:

I have a buddy in this business. Does really well. There's a bit of money in it. He used to run a trucking company but got totally burned out.

Given the OP's post, it's not worth it. You're looking at a couple thousand dollars, at least. Find somebody local you trust

But sounds like the mechanic will fix the transmission under warranty. A transmission rebuild is probably more expensive than shipping but I’m not sure.

It does seem like a lot of hassle. I’d personally buy a new truck.

Not exactly cross country, but several years ago, I found a ‘96 GMC Yukon GT in Ohio, bought it, had it picked up & transported to Louisiana by McNutt Transport. I think they may have been absorbed by someone else, but IIRC, was less than $500 for the one-way haul…

Last June most quotes were about a dollar a mile on a 2000 mile trip. One quote was 75 cents a mile.

No but I saw a piece of crap in DFW with Hawaii plates a few days ago.

I told my kid the person probably paid two thousand dollars to ship a five thousand dollar car over.

Bad move.

What happens if there’s a warranty issue with the new transmission?

Unless you are on Christmas Island, find a closer shop. You can pay a premium

You should move back to where your mechanic is

Cheapest (and imho best) way would be to drive it to him if it’s driveable and fly home. Do the opposite when finished. Not the most efficient use of time but likely to be significantly cheaper and you’re not trusting your vehicle to someone who may be farming the job out to someone they haven’t vetted properly.

Cheapest way is to find a deadhead, an empty truck returning after dropping off a load. Unless you are dealing with old cars, should not be that hard to find a mechanic.

I did enclosed from AZ and it was like $2K.

I would think Hawaii would be 5K.

I did it few months ago. Went through a broker that set me up with an uncovered trailer. Took them 2 days to get it to Houston. Think I paid just under 1k. Car showed up in good condition, just really dirty exterior.
