Flashback: When John Madden first saw greatness in Tom Brady...

The date was September 9, 2002. Then 25-year-old Tom Brady was quarterbacking his team to an eventual 30-14 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. When the score was 17-7, Madden became reminded of a legendary NFL QB while watching Brady lead the Patriots on offense.
While the Patriots would finish the '02 season with a 9-7 record and miss the playoffs, it would be the first and only time in his career that Brady would miss the post-season as a full-time starter.

I liked madden. It was cool how he traveled in his big rv. I miss his input.

He called Super Bowl 36.
He famously said the pats should play for OT against the rams.
So he initially doubted Brady lol

No doubt.
He also saw greatness in Becky “Icebox” O’Shea

Then when Brady got them to FG range he famously said "What Tom Brady just did gives me goosebumps"

Announcers always hype up the game/players they are calling. If you pay attention to any one announcer, throughout the whole season they will have about 10 best qb in the league, best wr in the league etc

True. However, this was Madden making a comparison to Joe Montana in regards to Tom Brady when he was in his first season as New England's full-time starter.

That Madden documentary awhile back was a good watch. JM wanted the game to be great.

He also said while he wouldn't have done it, it ended up being the correct decision ha.

Football needs another John Madden.

John Madden would have a heart attack if he knew the NFL turned into

I’m pretty sure I remember Madden claiming RGIII was the best Quarterback he’d ever seen when they whipped a head coach-less Saints team in his NFL debut.
ETA: His exact quote after RG3’s first game
“He’s the best player in the NFL today”

And if Brady would have flopped? Would you made a thread how Madden has no idea what he’s talking about?
I’m sure, as the point the other poster was making, commentators make bold statements about players all the time.

Find the YouTube clip to back up your “pretty sure” memory, because I’m 100% sure that didn’t happen.

Slightly off on my memory, but not by much. Hence my using the words “pretty sure”.
quote:
It’s darn near an impossible task to open up and play the Saints in their place,” Madden said. “I mean, no one wins down there, so I didn’t expect him to do anything like he did. But I did want to see him, and I wanted to see what he had. And at some point, I have to admit that I said this, it just came out, I said RGIII’s the best player in the NFL today. That’s what I really thought. Those words did come out.”

If Brady had flopped no one would have remembered him for anything, save for that impressive last-minute march down the field to beat the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI. Unfortunately for you and for this exercise of yours, Brady didn't flop. He went on to have what is inarguably the greatest career a starting NFL quarterback has ever had.
John Madden made a very bold statement in Week One of Brady's first season as New England's full-time starter, comparing him to Montana. That comparison ultimately proved prescient.

Gruden was pretty much meme level with "This guy right here..."

Madden nearly always wore blue jeans and tennis shoes, with no laces, below his CBS jacket, dress shirt & tie.
