Yet another draft failure

Jeff Ireland has been running scouting since 2015, and got majorly applauded for the 2017 draft, but I'm sure this bust was because of Loomis because he didn't fire Ireland, even though the same people calling for Mickey's head are the same ones that wanted Ireland to take over.

Torn between lamenting another 1st rounder wasted and wanting to celebrate that at least Loomis didn't get a chance to re-sign him at $12m per.

Those same posters will also fail to see that the team completely revamped the scouting department around 2023. Possibly because of grades on players like Turner

I wouldn't say completely since Ireland is still kicking around. Another bad one and it will be time to let him go as well.

I just find it funny that any success is never attributed to Loomis yet EVERY failure is.

What a loser. If you looked at his instagram it was obvious he wanted to be anywhere but a football field.

What exactly does Mickey do then ?

He’s not to blame for the drafts because someone does that for him.

Harley heads up the shovel shite into the future department.

Sign FAs? Hires the coaches ?

Hires the coaches and staff. He is to blame if they prove ineffective and he keeps them on, like in the case of Allen.

Even roster cuts are still discussed with HEAVY coaching staff input, as Mickey let's the head coach generally have final say on roster decisions.

Ireland has been trending to the bad, but could have been Payton and Allen's final decisions leading to most of the bad choices. We'll have to see how it goes under the new regime, because if the draft is a bust again, Ireland needs to go.

That 23 revamp yielded Foskey, Miller, and Salvaderi. Nice revamp.

Dude had a 4th round grade on him and we took him in the first. Heads needed to roll.

Just never understood this pick or picking Fosky over Branch. They more worried about RAS scores than film.

Payton brought Ireland in precisely for helping evaluate players on metrics like that, which is why I worry if as long as Ireland is here we will keep leaning on it.

True, but I see it as the equivalent of Ireland being the HC and he replaced the coordinators and assistants

Show me the scouting department that has ever batted 1.000 in a draft? That year they also drafted Bresee, Howden, and “that” preseason favorite Haener

Not a bad comparison, but he needs to rely less on RAS and more on production for final evaluations. You do need to take RAS into account, but you shouldn't use it above production, nor should you use it to dismiss really good, quality production.

Really makes you think how much money Gayle could save on salaries. Why have a college scouting department if you are going to minimize actual production, and rely so heavily on RAS. Was hoping that was a Payton thing and went out the door with him, but apparently it’s a ln Ireland thing

It's definitely an Ireland thing because it was talked about when we brought him in, how we were using a new method of scouting.

The old method was also shite, but using almost solely RAS was a horrible overcorrection.

As is overemphasizing a guy being captain and such, which we also still do.

What do they do ON THE FIELD. That should always be first. Then, how strong/althletic/fast/etc is he should be second. If those are good AND he also was captain/had accolades/whatever then it's a bonus, not a key drafting point.
