Canada slaps electricity tariffs on New York, Minnesota, Michigan

The government of Ontario is applying a 25 percent surcharge starting Monday on electricity exports to three U.S. states in response to U.S. tariffs on Canada.
This surcharge will affect electricity sales for 1.5 million homes and businesses across Michigan, Minnesota and New York, the Ontario government said. In total, it could cost up to $400,000 per day.
New market rules are going into place requiring Canadian electricity sellers to add a $10 per megawatt-hour surcharge, equivalent to a quarter of the electricity’s average value, to the cost of power for sales to the U.S., according to a statement from Ontario’s Office of the Premier.
The additional charges are a response to 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports to the U.S. announced last week by the Trump administration. LINK

Good. Time for us to build new sources.

In the tariff war mentality, I thought you taxed the imports, but here Canada has it backward taxing their export. They will sell less excess capacity

I don’t blame them. On the high end that’s pushing $360 million per year and it’s something those residents have to have.

Couldn’t happen to 3 better states unless CA was involved.

You know what beats this?
The US has made it very difficult to build nukes. Couple that with our trend toward de-industrialization and the timeline for new generating capacity is extended, to say the least.

I thought tariffs were on imports? That's taxes on exports.

Will be interesting to see how it goes down. Export tariffs are not import tariffs.
They are pissed off now and want to make Trump realizes how much is at stake economically for America with their largest trading partner …… and apologize for belittling them so much.
So Americans in the Great Lakes Region are going to be paying higher electricity prices.

No wonder I suddenly stopped seeing the ubiquitous commercials for Ontario on tv.

Hydo-Quebec is going to spill their dams.

pretty dumb of them to rely on another country (or even another state) for power
Posted on 3/10/25 at 12:51 pm to Jbird
why aren't they using american electricity in the first place?
theres two options, tell cnada to frick off and use american or pay the tax and use it as a grift that Trump caused electricity to prices to go up
wonder which the dems will choose....

A tariff is a tax placed on goods when they cross national borders. The most common type is an import tariff, which taxes goods brought into a country. There are also export tariffs, which are taxes on goods a country exports, though these are rare. The United States does not allow export tariffs; the Constitution (Article I, Section 9) forbids them.
