We just got here, staying in Times Square. What’s the easiest way to get started on the subway, for price and understanding it? We have 4 of us including 2 teens.

you can just walk up to the turnstiles and tap a credit card on the NFC readers.

Download CityMapper from the App Store.

If the kids are little, just push them through the turnstile as you go through. If older, they need their own passes.

The system is easy once you get your bearings.

You just use your phone like you would for Apple Pay. Couldn’t be easier.

I would not take the subway as a tourist. No way

OP, it was never hard, but it got stupid easy a few years ago when they dropped tickets/passes. Just use a credit card (if you have one that can tap to pay; it will have the little wi-fi looking icon on it if it does) or your pay app with your phone at the turnstiles. If you have kids, just be the first one to the turnstile, but don't go through. Pay, have someone pass through. Pay, have someone pass through. Pay and let yourself through. Easy peasy.

As for navigating, google maps has a public transit option that will make it as easy as getting driving directions.

It’s the cheapest and fastest way to get around the city. Your take is idiotic.

I used Google maps, and chose the transit as mode. It gives you info on where to go etc. Easy

I use the maps app on iPhone. The same one used for directions while driving. I just change the type of travel to the public transport. It looks like a little bus or subway. Enter exact addresses or business name or destination like Times Square will work. It walks you through step by step where to get on, which train and when to get off. It’s usually helpful to know if you are going up or down since the same letter or number trains can travel in the same platform. It has never led me wrong. Anytime I got lost it was my mistake. As far as access I have typically purchased a metro card for the duration of my trip and carried that card. Though using the iPhone like you would a boarding pass is efficient too.

I don't go often anymore, but when I go now it's for work and I don't pay for ubers so i use them.

NYC is the only city where I get car sick though with the terrible driving and the starts and stops every 10 feet

I absolutely love the NYC Subway

I go to NYC about once a year and the first time I walk down into the subway I start feeling nostalgic

Use google maps and select transit mode and it will take care of the rest. Make sure you know which direction your train is heading (the last stop on the line)

I have a family and so does the OP. There is no way I am putting my family on the NYC Subway.

OP, ignore this Poli Boarder. The subway is fine during the day and unless you're on a route to a bad neighborhood or riding very late, you'll be fine at night too. Just stay alert just like you would above ground.

Your kids are more at risk to your wife's poor driving than they are to the NYC subway.

Friend,

There were over 1,000,000,000 NYC subway rides in 2024. There were 2700 assaults and robberies on NYC subways in 2024. The odds of you being injured on the subway are significantly less than if you walk or take a cab. The NYC subway is very safe.

Yours,

NYC Subway in Manhattan may be the easiest to understand in the world.

Google Maps now makes it stupid easy and gives step by step even if transfer to another line is needed.
