The Atlantic: weed legalization didn’t deliver on its promises. In fact, it made it worse

I am not against letting people consume what they want, but I was always skeptical of the folks who claimed legal weed would lead to positive, indirect externalities. I also think we can safely claim at this point that weed is indeed a gateway substance.

I am not arguing for rolling back legalization efforts, I am more just calling out a lot of OT lounge folks who promised the moon re: legalization

“Based on weak scientific evidence.”
“Recent reviews suggest.”

This article doesn’t really move the needle for me either way.

So the legal use of weed does not lead to new highs?

As a non-weed smoker, I am 100% for the legalization of marijuana usage.

However, the claims by NORML and the weed bros on here were always laughable.

Can't read the whole article but if they're trying to tie weed use directly to opioid use without taking into account the prevalence of opioids between now and then, then that's a pretty weak argument.

Were prescription opioids and fentanyle as prevalent back then?

I don't smoke and I don't really mind whether it's legal or illegal, but this seems like a stretch.

So we back to the devils lettuce being a gateway drug?

There was a time when The Atlantic was a universally respected institution in the world of long form journalism. That time has passed.

People with an addictive personality are going to get addicted regardless, whether it's weed or it's alcohol, gambling, smoking, etc.

The people who have an unhealthy problem usually get better because they replace the addiction with a healthy problem like church, working out, fad diets, etc.

Gone are the days of mexican brick weed. The cartels now traffic way worse drugs instead of weed.

I would bet that marijuana usage has lowered alcohol consumption. Personally, I think weed is less harmful to your body than alcohol.

Doesn't matter. There are better, more practical reasons for legalization.
