The last several times I’ve withdrawn money from my checking account the bank teller asked me for my occupation. The amounts have been anywhere from $2-5k and the withdrawals have been about once a month.

Is this getting reported to the IRS or is this some kind of procedure for the individual bank?

It’s tied to money laundering monitoring

That's strange because, at least to the best of my memory, banks aren't required to submit CTRs that unless the amount is $10k or more.

More than likely it's the bank doing what they feel is due diligence in being on the lookout for customers making withdrawals under duress.

Talk to the branch manager and let them know it's become annoying and see what your options are.

Its reported to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). There’s a $3,000 rule that your Bank probably takes more seriously than is necessary, but no it’s not reported to the IRS and no you don’t need to worry, especially if the cash is for legal purposes.

Bank’s are also forced to investigate if there is a consistent pattern of large cash withdrawals

I'm all in favor of this once they address the millions or billions of bribes paid to politicians, NGOs, and other malfeasance.

Up until then I wish the people pretending to care about money laundering would focus on the big fish doing the most damage to public good instead of asking Bob the plumber or Edith the retired woman what they are doing with 5 or 10k in their bank account

Thank Biden and the Bank Secrecy Act. Under the guise of stopping money laundering, they are instead using it against every day Americans. Trust me, banks don't like it either. We've had to hire an extra employee just for all the new regulations and requirements of the last few years. Yet certain banks are apparently allowed to do whatever the hell they want and their investors, depositors get taken care of while smaller banks have to ask permission to piss a drop.

I’ve had large cash deposits after selling a watch or gold or silver and they ask where the money came from. I just troll them and tell them I made it cutting grass over the weekend or selling hamburgers and hotdogs out of a food cart. There’s nothing they can do. They are just filling out a form required by law.
