Trump 45/47 named Kash Patel as the acting director of the ATF.
One person leading both agencies has never happened before.
I'd like discussion on the pros and cons about this.

Sounds temporary until they can get someone permanent to replace the piece of shite recently removed as the director of ATF.

When he inevitably shows up, everyone just ignore him. He hates that more than being proven wrong.

Why do we need both agencies?
Posted on 2/22/25 at 4:01 pm to Smeg
Do we need ATF? Fold it into FBI.

I thought the emoluments clauses would prevent this but they don't. They are not applicable here.

He is there to reform the fbi. He is over the atf in the same capacity as McMahon is for the DOE. The atf will be nuked as it is corrupt and not needed.

Good! Maybe it won't take so long to get background checks done now.

Pro's. Find a badass and give him more things to fix.

Speed up all the e forms to 5 minutes
Rewrite findings to expand gun rights
That can be done immediately

Eliminate redundancy.

None, unless you are a communist and pretend the ATF is actually a useful service for Americans.

If it is temporary until someone else who is competent can fill the position, I'm fine with it. Long term, I think Kash needs to focus on FBI and not split time between the two.
Some have suggested fold ATF into FBI. Not sure where I stand on that particular issue. I guess that would depend on what "their" individual mission statements are and if there is currently a lot of overlap.

If he disbands AFT, it's a pro. If he doesn't, it's a con.

At the best end of the spectrum, both agencies are in need of massive reform. And extreme purging.
At the worst end of the spectrum, both agencies need burned to the ground and replaced.
I myself would prefer to see two soldiers fighting that fight, rather than one.

It’s not necessary to have the two agencies, but there should be a specialized unit within the FBI who are experts in firearms and explosives (separately or together).
The Tobacco and Alcohol parts can be handled by regular FBI agents as needed.
The only tobacco cases I saw over a career were just one or two terror cells and mafia types who were making a side hustle by selling cigarettes with fake tax stamps.
I saw no federal alcohol cases come through New Orleans in 25+ years.

Repeal the NFA. We need common sense gun control in this country.

“Is John Smith DOB 1/1/1950 SSN 123456789” a felon, have a restraining order against him or on a psychiatric hold? If no John Smith gets whatever firearm he wants right now.
