threats -- 'it is all about me' and the game is pretty well insulated from such. No question the league has its share of phenoms but the structure and complexity of the game tends to have a diluting effect on the individual.
It is a beautiful game, chocked full of athleticism and crazy action. I sure these recent games have attracted more fans...

You’ll never hear a hockey player talk about “building their brand”

I wonder why that “me first” attitude hasn’t infiltrated hockey like it has many other sports.

Because like two of them are identifiable so they can't build brands.

Not enough fights these days
I miss the days when every team had at least one tough guy to where if he was on the ice you knew it could go down at any moment

The best players can't just do it all by themselves, they need help.
It's similar to the NBA in that you need to be a good two way player or you won't be long for the league, or be a 4th line guy (unless you have an absolute cannon like Ovechkin). But you also have to be physical and battle for 50/50 pucks. It's required, even from the best players. That's not required in the NBA any more.
The NBA also built a model where they put a spotlight on their best players, propping them up, hoping to get more interest. The NHL doesn't really do this, and has been criticized for it. But it also doesn't create the massive egos in the NBA.
The culture in the game of hockey is also very different than the NBA or NFL.

How "me first" were football/basketball/baseball players when the highest salary in the league was 13 mil?

The culture of youth hockey has a lot to do with it. There is no AAU type bullshite.

Do their salaries have anything to do with it?
I imagine we’d see more selfish play if guys outside of your main core could still sign 9 digit contracts.

Meh, fighting is fine occasionally but it's kinda played out.
Sticking up for your guy after he just took a dirty hit, 100% love those.
Squaring off to "energize your team" is dumb.

I really don't think so, but we're about to find out. The cap is going up pretty significantly over the next few years.

An elite player in the NHL is more likely to make those around him better. NBA seems more like a me first sport, NFL has too many parts to really make other individuals better, and same for MLB. In a lot of ways, I feel like tennis and MLB have more in common that you're on your own, but you might get some help to improve.

I'm taking my talents to Montreal.

Physical violence.

Even when they can, they don't want to.
Connor McDavid has no interest in being a brand. He wants to be one of the best players of all time. The only guy I can think of who sorta wanted that life was Sean Avery, and everything I've ever heard about him is that he really is just an odd dude who likes fashion.
There's a saying in hockey that isn't repeated in other sports: the name on the front means more than the name on the back.
That's not just jargon. That's true to the culture of the game as a whole.

I’m from Louisiana, so the only hockey game I have ever been to is the Monroe Moccasins, around 98 or 99. Typically only will watch playoff hockey at best.
I enjoyed every second of that game last night. Love the constant action. I may become a hockey fan.

There are definitely some selfish guys over the years:
Pierre Luc-Dubois
Jeff Carter
Evander Kane
To name a few

It seems all in good fun but young hockey players seem to have some lacrosse level swag these days.
Give it 20 years and let their contracts reach MLB/NFL/NBA level and I’d bet we see a little more selfishness.
There’s probably a ceiling to it, given the sport, though.

Used to be said about college football as well. Not so much anymore. Beloved LSU alum Ryan Clark once said that while there.
