Looking for recommendations for a nice hotel close to metro stop in Washington DC. Taking wife and son in July. Flying in Reagan National and would like to primary use metro. Uber is option if hotel is worth it.

Lots of options. I have stayed at the Hamilton Hotel before and it's a good bang for your buck right downtown and recently remodeled. It's a block from McPherson Square and walkable to the mall, white house, etc.
There are much more expensive options downtown like the Hay Adams, Waldorf Astoria (formerly Trump Hotel), etc if that's your thing. Basically anywhere besides Georgetown, which doesn't have a metro stop, will be relatively close the metro.

I liked staying in Old Town in Alexandria

I like to stay around Dupont Circle. Look that up on the travel sites. Tons opf mid tier hotel near there. Le'eFANT Plaza has some deals at times too. But I like Dupont because I walk the embassy streets in the mornings and there are lots of places to eat early and late before seeing the sites. I also used Ebikes a lot too. They have great bike lanes in DC and it's really easy to get around on bike.

We stayed at JW Marriott at Freedom Plaza last summer. Perfect location for DC.

I’d recommend staying near the Foggy Bottom-GWU station. It’s a good spot, close to the National Mall, and there’s a Hilton Garden Inn nearby. Another solid choice is the Hyatt Place DC/White House, which is close to McPherson Square metro.

I've also stayed around DuPont Circle. They have a lot of international restaurants there (near embassies) and the area is well lit at night with plenty of foot traffic.

Edit: I actually used to stay at the Hyatt Regency on Capital Hill. I'm an idiot

Wife and I stay at the Clarion Collection Hotel Arlington Court Suites. Daughter lives in Arlington.
Right by the Metro and $12 Uber ride from Reagan. Breakfast is included.

If you could swing it, I would do Grand Hyatt at Metro center. I always stay at hyatts because the point redemption is cheaper and can use chase sapphire points.
The grand Hyatt is by a lot of shops/entertainment district, Chinatown, arena. Central to walk to most everything but also have direct access to red/blue/orange lines without having to switch trains if you want to zoom up to the zoo or dupont

Not my favorite DC hotel by far, but best combo of nice hotel, location, and Metro access. Station underground and connected to hotel development.

Anywhere besides Georgetown with "NW" in the address will likely be a nice place near a metro.
Three metros in particular have a lot going on in the area with plenty of hotels nearby:
- Foggy Bottom
- McPherson Square
- Dupont Circle
If I were you, go to chatgpt (or searchgpt) and ask for it to provide you all the hotels with availability within your given price range and also within a few blocks walking distance from these three metro stops, and you'll have plenty to choose from.
