Where is Trump/Doge on property taxes?

I think/thought I saw something the other day about Elon/DOGE or maybe Trump coming out against property taxes. As I recall the issue was if you have to pay property taxes you don't truly own the property as you are still paying Government rent via property taxes. I agree with this idea and hate paying property taxes. I own my furniture in my house and don't have to continue to pay the Government to use said furniture. Why should I have to continue to pay Big Gov to own my own property????

Completely agree, but that's a state/local issue. Would still be nice to hear them talk about it, though.

So you’re paying property taxes to the IRS? Somebody is scamming you.

Sure. But it is state and local property tax not federal…..

State and local issue, not federal.
But even if they got rid of property taxes, where do you want them to make that tax revenue up? You still have to fund schools, police, courts, prisons, firefighters, roads, infrastructure, parks, and everything else not paid for by the feds.
We don’t like income tax. So are we going to just add a few % onto sales taxes to make it up?

That has been a pet peeve of mine for my whole life. I think Musk is visiting this website, because I have mentioned property take here a few times before and also said we should get a kick back from savings to get the whole country wanting more cuts.

To you and the two others before you. I never said it was a Federal Tax. Just that as long as I have to pay property tax, I don't truly own my property. Yes, I mentioned Elon/Dodge because I thought he made a mention about property taxes the other day which might have gotten others to think about it.
We (not all States) have State income tax as well as the state and local sales tax and I'm sure there are some others we don't even know about. It's kind of like looking at your $45 Cell Phone bill and once the taxes, fees and other undefined charges are added up it's now $83.79.

Get blown up in Iraq…come back with shrapnel in your arse…pay $0 property taxes.
That’s how I outsmarted the government (sarcasm).

Ron Desantis just came out a few days ago, against the property tax.
I think their thought is let the gas tax and all of the tourist taxes make up for it. LA could use taxes on the petrochemical industry, then eliminate income and property taxes if they could just get the politicians to quit stealing it.
Somebody that spends millions to get a $23k per year job has a plan on how to get those millions back. They are dirty.

quote:what shocked me years ago when I looked into the property taxes scam is that no state has $0 property tax. Talk about tax break that brings appeal to your state. I could see a governor like DeSantis leading the charge on this. Crazy it took Trump in office and for a second time for this finally to become a talking point.

Really makes me believe change is in the air just hearing about all the things you’d only dream of finally being mentioned out loud by people in this administration. Doing away with Property taxes, income taxes, term limits, ending the fed…. All used to be taboo to speak

More good news is here. They released a new poll last night. Casey Desantis is in the lead to be the next governor. The Disney Groomer crew would be fit to be tied.

Yes. People move to places with good schools. Then the apartments come and the school turns to shite. Schools respond by demanding a higher millage.
Let the apartment dwellers help fund schools. Visitors. Let the city encourage tourism and business to drive revenue.
I’d much rather be taxed on my usage vs some arbitrary number.

If you are a business you have to pay property tax on even your furniture too. Ad valorem, which must mean you own nothing.
Posted on 2/19/25 at 5:29 am to Geaux-2-L-O-Miss
We need to eliminate all duplicative forms of taxation and shift to a sales tax system, similar to the Fair Tax Plan proposal for both state and federal taxes.

Those of us that live in Texas enjoy no state income tax but get hammered on property taxes.
My county has a 1.75% rate so if you own a 500K home you pay $8,750 per year, $729.16 monthly.
Our taxes + homeowners insurance double the mortgage escrow payment

Yep, it sucks. Even worse is that it is enshrined in Texas law that the taxing district can go up by a max of 10% each year which is exactly what they do. Then it is up to homeowners to protest. Texas lawmakers snd Gov Abbott need to fix that. Why should we be taxed on unrealized gains. There had to be a better way.

Here in SE Ohio I complain that ours is 1.1% of market value. Glad I don't live in Texas.

Property taxes are completely irrational and a great example of something people seem to blindly accept. The idea that you have to pay a tax on your dwelling in perpetuity is, on it's face, completely insane.
Posted on 2/19/25 at 6:20 am to coolpapaboze
Plus the cocksucker are now using market home value to use as the number to tax you by!
It’s fricking insanity!! Why is it that during COVID none of our property taxes went down even though schools were close for a year!!
We already get taxed thru our teeth!!
